To be blown out or not...

We all know Iowa has to get better recruits to become a top half team in the Big Ten again. The question I have, for recruiting purposes, what scenario would be more beneficial?

1. New coach in a program, as Iowa and gets blown out against any good team in conference and doesn't compete, or
2. New coach in a program, as Iowa and competes in most games, but has an occasional blowout?

For me, it is kinda easy, I think scenario two would be best because, as in Iowa's case, the program is way down, but with a couple more quality players could be in a position to make a huge leap to the top half of the conference. I see a lot of times that Iowa's only marketing at this point is playing time, but I beg to differ. How many people thought blowouts were going to be commonplace for Iowa this season?
If I am a recruit, why go to a team that has no hope to get better by me going there. Wouldn't it make more sense to be able to tell a recruit that "look we have been in a lot of games, we just need that one person to take us to the next level, that could be you." I actually think this is where the Iowa program is at this point. Does Iowa need more than one difference maker, yeah, but also Cartwright/Basabe will improve in year two, Iowa just needs one more guy to step up.
Look at how long it has taken NW/PSU to build something, or anything really and what they build is a snapshot and both programs will fall to futility again soon. Iowa is not that kind of program, history has proven it.
When Cezar visits, I pray Iowa doesn't get blown out, to me, it gives him the opportunity to think about what Iowa has coming back and what he can add to them. In other words, can I be that difference maker they need to get over the hump?

We play #8 Purdue (probably top 5 team when we play them) the day Cezar visits. NOT GOOD. In all reality, probably a blowout. But man how sweet it would be to beat them and have the student body rush the court and have Cezar witness that. When was the last time we rushed the court anyway? I can dream can't I...

I'm sure Cezar will be very impressed seeing Elvis leading all fifty students unto the court. Dollar dogs that day might draw 25 or 30 more.

Iowa will battle Purdue. They won't quit and many times that impresses a recruit. Also, a recruit can come away thinking that they could get some immediate playing time. I find it funny how people forget that Purdue was a struggling program Painter's first year. I believe they won 3 conference games, just like Iowa has this year and went 9 and 19 overall. That record didn't detour recruits like Etwaun Moore, Robbie Hummel and Jujuan Johnson from going to Purdue. Then again some people are always doom and gloom and think that you can never go up against the big boys.

You think having him see douchebags is going to make him want to come to Iowa?

Some clown on TOS was wanting the students to have a toga day in honor of Cezar. And then they wonder why people think the state of Iowa is full of hicks.

I pray -- no, I expect -- Cezar to see a CHA full of screaming, excited Hawkeye fans 1) giving Jarryd Cole a long, loud standing ovation in his last home game and 2) an Iowa team that gives Purdue everything it has and is in position to win it in the final seconds.

I'm going. First game of the year. I will make sure Purdue gets an ear full...

Maybe instead of wearing togas, the Hawk's nest could attempt to subdue the Gauls. That would honor Cezar and be more high minded.

Any recruit that would go to a school under scenario #1 vs scenario #2 is not someone you want on your team. They care about playing time more than winning.

This implies that there is one after that....?

Anyhow, I don't think it really matters to recruits how much Iowa loses by. A loss is a loss is a loss, be it by 2 or 20. Thinking positively, a blowout loss may tell a recruit that playing time will be plentiful, and/or that the team really needs him.

From the fans perspective (or at least mine) I would rather lose the close ones in excruciating fashion as opposed getting rolled every night. The silver lining (again, fan perspective) in a close loss is that if 2 or 3 things go differently, you win the game. Iowa missed 3 dunks against Wisconsin and lost in OT, and couldn't get the one stop they needed against Michigan and Northwestern. The close losses, at least to me, tell me that maybe this team is further along than most everyone thought they would be at this point.
