To answer hawkinn3's question

dbs will take a hit if jackson goes pro

I kind of put this in the category of "we have no margin for error" chestnut that KF has used to great affect. I remember us losing a record-setting WR just before we played Mizzou in a bowl game and we won. So the "we have no depth" mantra gets overplayed imo. Plus, can someone provide a link stating that JJ has no intention of coming back? That truism seems premature.

Notice that he said “if Jackson goes pro,” dummy.

So, the WR's better hold true and progress, or it could be a longer season than we might anticipate. I'm looking at 9 wins next season, minimum. Who's with me?!

I know this is bold and very early to say, but with the way the schedule sets up, on paper Iowa could be August favorites in 11 of 12 games (with at Penn State being the exception). 9 wins would be the floor of expectations if that holds true. Returning as much as they do on the OL, DL, and QB positions, the expectations will be high.

That said, losing what they do at LB has led to disappointing seasons on multiple occasions (2006, 2010, and to a lesser extent 2014).

2014 is because of the just one unit?

What was the problem in 2012?

I think you hit the reply button on the wrong post.
I said we'll be improved on special teams because I can't see how more experience will hurt us in any facet of that unit. If you're saying we have bad punters . . . ok (I think that is overblown but won't argue the point). Are you suggesting they will be worse next year? I would assume either they will improve with time or someone else will step up.

No Josh. I actually agree with you assessment for next year.

LB will drop off considerably. I'm not worried about RB at all. Toren Young and IKM are locked and loaded.

Yeah I've read the posts . . . "I'm concerned so and so graduates . . . I'm concerned about depletion at such and such position" . . . etc.

QB - improved. And deep.
RB - ah ha, you want to panic, admit it. Don't worry. Iowa will be alright. Wadley will be missed. But someone will make a name for themselves.
WR - improved
OL - improved
TE - more depth than any other team in the B1G

Special Teams - improved

DL -improved
LB - we'll be okay. Possible slight regression. But there is depth.
DB - improved

So there you have it. Da thoroughbreds will be even better next year.

I would say I would agree with most of this. I do think there is concern at the LB spot just cause losing a whole unit at once is tough. Hopefully the DL and DB units can pick up some of the slack (if there is any). I think Welch is certainly able and am excited to see if Jones and Mends can bring some added athleticism as well.

Let's hope they continue to let the reigns out for Stanley and that he doesn't have a sophomore slump (starting soph slump). Even Stanzi had the followup season where his comp % went down a bit and threw quite a few more INT's. Not sure I would classify this position as deep though. Wiegers will be a Sr who's thrown a grand total of 6 passes in his career and Mansell has not thrown a pass yet. We are 1 bad play away from a big unknown.

Losing Jackson would hurt if he in fact goes. I know we do have some depth there but I'll always take a really good known commodity over the back up.

Wadley will be missed but not in the true traditional RB sense. Young and Martin have shown they can fill that spot. What we will miss will be the out in space plays where he makes two or three moves that VERY few can make and gets us those extra several yds to keep drives alive.

Whatever drop off you see at that position, will be compensated for with an improved DL and secondary. So overall the defense will at best be better, at worst be the same. Either outcome is reassuring.

This touches on another point.

Our offense will be improved next year, so that also helps the defense. As others have stated, when the offense can stay on the field, that allows the defense to rest and remain healthy.

In the macro picture I see improvement in all 3 areas (ST; D; O). No regression. In a worst case scenario the units remain the same, but that's not what I am anticipating.

I would say my only concern is the LB's. I do agree that the guys behind Jewell, Niemann, and Bower have talent, but experience is part of what makes the current group so good. The staff may have some hangups as well, considering they're looking at JUCO LB's to fill some of this recruiting class.

However, they'll have a good, deep secondary to lean on, and what should be a great D-line to alleviate some of the pressure and eat up blocks, allowing them to roam free. Gotta agree with JB, the future looks bright.

Guys, just stop

We can't replace a once-in-a-lifetime player like
Wadley
The Outlaw
Josh Jackson

Please stop with the HC talking points.
Same thing was said about CJB and King and many others.

BTW, I'm not sure if our record will be better next year. But if it isn't, it won't be because of the players.
