Tis the season for de-commiting

I've seen that TN and Oregon have had some top recruits drop off this week. I'm sure some other really good players will be as well. Is Iowa going to try and go after any of these newly available top end kids? Iowa has close to 10 schollies available now with the ones we've had drop off too right? I hope the coaches are working their asses off this week and can salvage what was on target to be a top 20ish class.

Our coaches are gentlemen who respect the commitments that kids make even after their coaches get fired or move on. While it might be nice to think some of these kids would come to Iowa city, it isn't going to happen because our coaches are classy and play by the rules.

Well with Oregon they just fired their coach so it's understandable. And there is a lot of smoke out there about Kelly looking around outside of Notre Dame. Jones at Tennessee is also on a warm seat, but I don't see him being removed until after next season at the earliest. So, sadly these recruits situations aren't as comparable to Iowa's where the recruits left without a reasonable and understandable cause.

If you have been a Hawk fan for any length of time then you already know the answer to this which is NO. We don't go after big time recruits because I think we fear recruiting competition. We always want to be a big dog in a little pond so we swim with lower division schools. Toledo coaches sleep with one eye open knowing we are always trying to poach their recruits

Your right and it sucks.... You can't land any of those studs if you don't try. It's one thing if the kids point blank tell you no. But for crying out loud we built that cathedral of a football facility. Just get the kids to visit and the overall program about sells itself. I live in TN and for the life of me can't understand how they are recruiting so well. Their coach is a douche. They have pretty much imploded inside out as a team down the stretch. Yet they just landed the best Olineman in the class (from TN. Clear across the state from them but in TN nonetheless) and have a top 15ish class so far going. Other than their fancy facility and being in the SEC that's all they are selling. Come be a middle of the pack SEC team that can't find a legit coach since Fulmer retired.... That's their pitch to recruits. I would just think Iowa could be doing better than we are with what they have to offer.

A person can throw a the line the water and wait for a fish to bite. Another person might throw a line in and work different depths, use different bait, and try different approaches. One might also call it a day earlier than another.

We would say they are both fishing and be factually correct.

I recognize recruiting to Iowa isn't easy but I do believe we can do better. Let's see how we finish but right now I'm viewing the glass half empty for a variety of reasons.

Iowa has offered over 20 of Rivals top 200 2018 Kids. They have already received visits from 6 of them. Lots of the others will never visit and many will fall of Iowa board. Not because they didn't "fish" for them, but because they simply are not interested in Iowa for multiple reason (not a blue blood, proximity, etc).

Saying we don't recruit and offer 'big time recruits" is factually incorrect.
I know they do initially. What I meant by starting this thread is aggressively going after some of those that have recently made themselves available again. Without knowing if there was a history of any kind with them the first go round of evaluating/recruiting. It'd make more sense to go after those that are available than some of those currently committed to other schools right? Especially if they are higher rated kids to boot..

I don't chose to measure success by activity (offers/visits). I would measure it by results (signings). We had over sixty offers out early this year to 4/5 star players and have landed one. If this staff had a better record of landing some of these elite I would put more value to the offers/visits. The point was not that Iowa isn't fishing but that there should be better fish being put on the stringer. I'm not doomsday on Ferentz & Co. with recruiting but I do believe we can and should do better especially with new facilities, 20 plus wins in the last two years, new marketing & staff support, etc.

As I said, I'm willing to see how this recruiting season finishes out before reaching a verdict on this current class but I have concerns at this stage. Do you believe this program should be doing better on the recruiting trails?
