Tim Polasek Sees Progress with Hawkeye Offensive Line

Oline play will make or break the season they'll have. I think their RBs will be better than just solid. I think Stanley and his TEs will be great. If even just one WR were to step up and I think this will be that year it'll just come down to how well the line performs.

Yup yup yup. Slow slow zone plays to the outside of the tackle just don't work against that. Go right at them between the guards and center. To run our slow zone plays would be just doing what they want us to. Now granted Wisky isn't bad and can defend that well too. But I think it's the better plan of attack as your mentioning for sure and then of course play action off of it.
Exactly. And I have memories of J.J. or T.J. or whatever J. Watt pursuing down the line of scrimmage and blowing up our wide zone plays from the backside. You think of their size when Wisconsin linemen are mentioned. Those guys can move, too.

We have to keep running Fant up the seam until we hit one. We narrowly missed on it last year.

Who did we run the ball well against last year? I don't recall our running game moving the ball very well at all last year. Coach can say whatever he wants, words are words, lets see what happens when the season gets here. My guess is with Wadley gone, and still no receiving threats, the offense will be on par with where it was last year. I think Young and Kelly-Martin will be decent, but neither of them will be the threat Wadley was.

Remember this young offensive line coach?

We ran it down Nebraska's throat, but that probably shouldn't count because the AD had already cleaned out Mike Riley's office.

Our wide outs have disappointed for years, but that doesn't mean we have no receiving threats or playmakers. Your last several comments have failed to mention Noah Fant, who I think is both.

The key this year will be better field position, or at least someone who could keep a punt from rolling inside the ten. And of course a better punter. Would any of you like to have that safety back in the Penn State game? We lost by how many that night? One point? Had the bastards on the ropes. One of three losses that turned my stomach (PSU, Northwestern, Purdue)

If you thought he was a badass when he pancaked Gervase in the open field you should have seen him on a basketball court. He kind of led with his elbows when he played the post. And he undercut one of our guards on the break and pretty much deposited him on the back of his head.
That's badass? Sounds like he plays like a bitch

Get ready for the 340lb linemen on their OL. All are back. get rested boys.

Well you can't go through them. I'm a little encouraged that they have mentioned getting some guys to get lower, but if you can't go through them, they need to work on swim and shoulder dipping, since we lack in size but not athleticism.

Nothing wrong with a little nastiness in an offensive lineman a la Biadasz or Brandon Scherff or Eric Steinbach. I'll tell you what, legal or not, post players thought twice about going over his back for a rebound. Guards thought twice about driving the lane if his hip was waiting for them. Besides, refs have whistles. He had to be discreet about certain things. Being discreet about certain things is a large part of what makes an offensive lineman succeed because their at such a huge disadvantage otherwise. I would take five Tyler's across my o-line in a heartbeat and I watched him elbow my nephew in the ribs. He was whistled. And my nephew is a Wisconsin fan going to Iowa State so part of him had it coming.

The latest news I am reading, is that Keegan Render seems to have a firm hold on center and has emerged as the leader of the offensive line. Cole Banwart emerged as the leading candidate for right guard with Levi Paulsen out for the rest of the spring.

Of course it's nice to have nastiness on the o line, does that include nut-punching at the beginning of every snap or smashing the back of the center's helmet? There's a difference between being a physical brute and a dirty player. I wouldn't call it "badass" if you take cheap shots on the basketball court. Like an oil-checker in wrestling? Sure I understand that it exists in all sports but I also believe that if you're any good you don't have to stoop to that level. Sportsmanship is more important than trying to injure the opposing players to try to gain an edge in a high school game.

We haven't moved the ball against Wisconsin's 3-4 since Anderson got there and then left. It's pathetic really

If I were ISU with the same scheme, I would watch last year's Wisconsin game tape closely. At least we will get a primer for it against ISU. Then a week with UNI and right up against Wisconsin.

God don't say that, they put up enough points on us that had their D been any better, that one would have been in the L column.
