Three members of the University of Iowa football program have been named to the ESPN Academic All-District Seven first team. Those players include senior OL Julian Vandervelde, senior LB Jeff Tarpinian and junior LB Tyler Nielsen. The announcement was made Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Each of the three Hawkeye players will now have their name placed on the national ballot for ESPN Academic All-America honors.

Big Ten Conference - These Universities had three each: Penn State, Indiana, Iowa, Northwestern and Purdue all had three Academic All-District® choices to lead Big Ten Conference institutions.

I knew Vandervelde/Nielsen excelled in the classroom, didn't know about Tarp.

Tarp is a real brainiac...I think he was around 4.0 in HS...and an accounting major. His Dad is in the FBI,which probably means he has a law or accounting degree.

He is sort of a wildchild on special teams and the hair(was rockin a mini-mullet there for awhile) I just assumed academia wasn't his strong suit. I guess you don't judge a book by its cover.:)
