Thoughts on Vandenberg

My take on Vandenberg for today was that he has a very strong arm. He was also pretty accurate for how poor the weather was at times. I thought he started strong and made some very good throws, but there were a few he probably would like to redo (first scoring drive, when he lobbed to Davis in the endzone, another was the tipped pass that Davis caught).

He also seemed very calm and collected throughout the game, making check downs, changing plays, and changing line protections.

I was somewhat nervous coming into the game about how our QB play would be this year, but I'm sitting comfortably now.

Any other thoughts on his performance today or what he may have shown potential for?
 
His two throws to Davis were bad - underthrown. Davis bailed him out on the N endzone one. I don't like how that looks for deep balls. His middle/short stuff was fantastic and he looks very poised and confident. CJF dropped an easy reception as well and so did Bullock. His true completion percentage today should be very high.
 
Really hard to say in weather like that. I thought he underthrew both fades, but you could certainly put that on the weather.

About all I can say is he did a good job not putting the Hawkeyes in bad situations. No silly interceptions. Didn't put his recievers in positions to take big hits.
 
On the busted play he made a nice throw to Derby that he dropped. He also hit some others right in the hands only to have them drop it.

I forgot about the Derby one... that was a bad drop too. TEs need to have some better hands rain or no.
 
I amazed that people were worried about Vandenburg at all.

He looks great, yes he underthrew the fades but every thing else was like clock work. He looked like he had total command of what was going on out there and shouldn't have had more than two incompletions on the day.

Obviously the receivers had trouble catching a wet ball and allot of them have never caught a pass in a game before but non the less, way to many drops, for Derby as well.
 
Not too worried about Vandenberg. Am worried about the receivers a bit though. Yes, weather was certainly an issue, and perhaps so is Vandenberg's arm strength in some cases, but we need our receivers to step up, especially with our running game hanging precariously (perhaps even more so than last year).
 
Maybe it was the rain and didn't want to pump fake, but he only looked off his primary receiver once or twice on his throws. Then again, his first option was usually open.
 
I thought he looked as good as could considering the conditions and being early on in the year. The receiving corps might have some work to do although some of the drops could attributed to the weather. I noticed a couple of the deeper throws looked like the ball might have slipped and came out wrong and wobbled. Otherwise he made play changes, adjusted to blitzes and avoided pressure much better than he has in the past.
 
Being his first game of the season, and the bad weather, I thought he did pretty good. He has some areas to improve upon. He and the team will have to step it up a notch next week if they want to win. Anyone who thinks going into Ames is going to be a cake walk better think again.
 
I recall 3 bad passes - the 2 fades to Davis and another deep out to Davis. There may have been another throw or 2, but beyond those few throws, I though JVB had a very good day. I think the first fade to Davis he should have thrown to Herman, as nobody had covered him on the out curl, but otherwise I really like JVB's decision making. Now if the pass catchers could catch the ball more consistently, there would have been considerably more points put up. Nothing JVB can do about putting the ball in the perfect spot and his targets not doing their part.
 
Thought he looked OK. Didn't seem to have the same zip on the ball - maybe he dialed it back because of the rain. He did come away pretty lucky on those 2 'fades' that were poorly executed and could have been picked off pretty easily.

Cant wait to see how he does against Ia State.
 
Thought he looked good. I would give him a B+ ... especially when you consider the weather, which really was cruddy. At least three balls were dropped. He did a nice job of running the offense. This was just a tough game all around -- given the weather conditions and then the 1.5 hour delay. Hard to get a true read of what this team will be this year. But overall, I thought Vandy looked good.
