Thoughts on Iowa's win over Hampton

I think that is the way it will start but IF what I saw from MG is what we see going forward it is not got going to cut it and we will lose games because of it.

Great coaches make the tough, tough choices like these. Rewarding a program guy and fan favorite or playing the best player whoever it is.

The thing that will make the tough choice a little easier for Fran is that the guy taking his minutes is a guy who deserves to be rewarded too.

Gesell will be fine. He has struggled shooting the rock that's about it. He is one of the better defenders on the team IMO and is the best distributor on the team. He had a 3-1 A/TO ratio last season, good enough for 21st in the nation and 2nd in the B1G. That was one game against an inferior opponent in which he only played 14 minutes. Way too early to say Clemmons has clearly passed him up. That said, Clemmons played extremely well and I hope it continues.

But only averaged 3.9 assists, more of a matter of just not taking any chances than making things happen. I could live with more turnovers if we had a pg who could actually penetrate and create for others.

Those 3.9apg were still good enough for 7th in the B1G. His assist percentage was 28.59% good enough for 3rd in the B1G. That means while he was on the floor, he created a shot for 28.59% of the field goals made by his team. Pretty good numbers for a PG. Throw in the fact that Marble had the ball in his hands a lot which limited Gesell's opportunities to create for teammates. Marble was 12th in the B1G in assist percentage with 23.59% and 10th in the B1G with 3.6apg. So basically, Iowa had 2 of the top 12 distributors on their team last season. That's a lot of creating that was done by those 2 players.

So yes, Gesell's numbers are not of the elite type but remember that Marble took a lot of his opportunities away. Gesell is much better than a lot of people think. He has struggled to score efficiently no doubt, hopefully he can turn that around. If he does, he could be a really good player by the time it's all said and done.

my thoughts, it was Hampton. If Iowa goes 2 for 3 against Texas/UNC/and ISU then I'll be pretty pumped for the season. Hopefully they can win one of those games.

I have my doubts about MG being a consistent double-figure scorer. But he does handle well, something that can't be overlooked or discounted. For those thinking Sapp is displacing MG, remember, they did start together the last 2 games. And in this last game, MG had 3 assists in 14 minutes while AC had 1 in 20 minutes. If anything, Sapp played more the SG with his shooting.

I am very happy about Sapp's resurgence. If he can hit the 3 consistently, he could stick as a starter. Otherwise, I see Jok starting by mid-season.

Sapp seems to be more of a money player than the other point guards. There probably is a reason his teams have won the last two prime time league championships. Iowa needs a money player at the end of games.

Sapp is a money player if he hits his outside shots. As Fran essentially said in a recent interview, AC can get some in transition and when he's left open. If Sapp can do that consistently, he might stick as a starter. I know he's had some great PTL seasons but they've never translated consistently to the regular season.

Bottom line: MG and Trey are better assist men and Jok is obviously a better scorer. But for now, I'm happy Sapp's a starter. The next few games will determine if he stays that way for the foreseeable future.

I agree that only time will tell how it all turns out. Sapp does seem to get revved up in a positive way in the big games. Last year against Michigan State I don't think he did that great though. I think Iowa has some clutch players this year, and it would be nice if Sapp was another one. Gesell did have more assists in the first game without playing nearly as many minutes.

Although i'm really excited they played well in their opener. We will surely find out what this team is made of really soon! Dates with NDSU, Texas, Syracuse (possibly) and Duke will speak volumes!

Wrong ACC team, you mean North Carolina. With the Iowa native being on their team might make even more interesting than playing slightly more prestigious Duke.

It was a big win for a first game. At least we didn't win by 11 over a lesser opponent. We didn't play perfect but a 34 point win leans to a lot more positives than the things we need to work on. MG will be ok, maybe he wasn't sure of his leadership role on the team. If TD can harness his speed and learn how to use it he could be special. By the end of the year I expect Jarrod Uthoff to be the leader of this team in scoring and otherwise.

It's always nice to beat the programs you're supposed to beat. Real answers will arrive on November 20th.

It was a good first game as everyone seemed to contribute in one way or the other. I am looking forward to our matchup with Texas. Some have said this will be one of the best Texas teams they have had in a long time.

WEEEE'RRRRREEEE BAAAAAAACCCCK!

The team played great tonight! This is going to be a great year for Hawkeye basketball!

St Nick and I think a lot alike. I'm really looking forward to seeing a White, Uthoff, Olaseni and
Jok dominated team, rotating guards to keep the opposition dizzy.

GO HAWKS

I think some of you are being a little hard on Gesell. It was a warm-up game against a team from the MEAC. I'll save my judgement until they play Texas, Cal, UNC, ISU and B1G games. Don't get me wrong I love the improved Clemmons, and Dickerson has potential, but it's just one game. This team is better when Gesell doesn't have to do the scoring and his assist% and assist/TO ratio are high.

I was impressed by White's play, I hope he keeps it up against tough opponents. Remember last year he would disappear in big games. I don't think that happens this year. We'll see what Woody and Olaseni are made of when we play Texas.

Why do cyfans always post that over here yet completely ignore it over there. I post things about the cyfans quite a bit but at cyfan every thread contains shots at Iowa.
