Thoughts on Iowa

For the most part I thought Stanzi looked very good. Although it seemed most of the passing plays were quick easy passes, not all but most.

His one deep ball he over threw a bit, which most likely would have been a touchdown. Seems like last year he didn't miss the deep ball much, and yes I know it was game 1, so it may have just been getting back into game speed. He did throw a perfect ball to Sandeman down the seem, but then he fumbled.

The one thing that concerned me was on one of his plays he looked to the left and nothing was open, and it was almost like he stood there thinking to himself what to do next. Did anyone else notice that? On the plus side he did not force the pass, which he probably would have tried last year. Vandenburg looked great, came into the game cold and played like he had started the whole game, that takes some pressure off, having a solid backup QB.

Brett Morse is a MAN. On one of ARob's TD runs to the left, Morse blocked one guy then after that guy was taken out of the play he ran and dove at another and took him out of the play, I was very very impressed with his blocking. I think with Jewel in the backfield and his quickness, he's going to be able to cut off Morse for some huge runs.

Both Tight ends were solid, always are it seems.

Adam Robinson is also a MAN. One person couldn't take him down, yes it was EIU but still, his quick spin move seems to throw people off a bit, I think ARob and Jewel are going to be a great combo.

DJK is going to take one to the house, soon. He seemed to just be 1 move away, I think he may get it against ISU.

D-Line looked great, triple teams on Clayborn are not going to work with our depth there. Ballard was EVERYWHERE, he just about picked off that pass he knocked down. Klug and Daniels got some great penetration also. With Daniel being able to compete at a high level like the other 4, I think he will be able to keep everyone fresh and not have a drop off in talent when he comes in.

Linebackers- I really dont think they did much, our Dline ate up the run, they did bite on a play action pass or twp though. Our Linebackers will need to be HUGE against ISU with everything spread out and that option they run, but I really didnt get a good feel on how good our backers are that game, having very few big plays though was a plus.

I liked Sash and Greenwood, they both came up and stuck people, I think that's something they both needed to do in order to get a chance at the NFL, prove they can come up and hit.

Corners i thought were good, Hyde did get beat deep on one play, but I think Kirk will coach him up this week, and prater will probably be back to sure up the corner spot.

Donahue had that great punt, the less punts he gets the better it is though, as much fun as it is to see him punt, I'll be happy if he never sees the field!

and last but not least THEY RAN THE JAILBREAK! It didn't go well, i think the lineman ran into DJK, but still I love that play and with our athletic receivers it could be huge this year

Very good read. Nice job. I agree with you on most. The overthrow of McNutt was one play in a first game and he only pass thrown deep. I liked the fact that on consecutive plays they ran a reverse to DJK for 16 and then came right back the next play with a reverse the other way with McNutt for 4 yards. They will keep teams off balance with their weapons.

Nice post, but the one area where you said after rolling out and the reads were checked down he kinda froze thinking what to do next. I think thats the difference from this year and last year. I'm happy to see Stanzi using his feet to get away instead of forcing the pass. Thats a sign of maturity. I really felt Iowa could of done anything it wanted to when they wanted to. After watching the replay of this game, the defensive line is men amongst boys. And thats putting it nicely. Yes its a FCS team, but still, just did whatever they wanted. Can't wait to gauge this team more vs ISU.

Some other observations:

- Bruce Davis. Who? He was the guy playing for Tarp at MLB. I don't recall ever really seeing him while watching the game. That is strange for a MLB playing at Iowa. At least that means he wasn't getting burned or anything.

- Brad Herman. I saw CJF on the bench behind this guy, he'll maybe see more playing time by mid-season.

- Kick Start. Thank you, Shrek, for booting the ball past the 15 on kickoffs. Remember when Kaeding used to split the uprights on kickoffs? It's good to have that kind of momentum-making tool again. Speaking of between the uprights, there were no field goals for Iowa in this game, meaning the jury is still out on the Mossbrucker and Murray show.

- A-Rob showed that he can be a work horse if needed. He also looked good catching the ball out of the backfield.

Last year to start the season Stanzi was off on the deep ball. Come AK State he started hitting 'em more consistently. I like the short, quick throws into the flat. The D was playing off and we would get 8-10 yards at a pop. Besides, they may be doing those throws to open up the middle of the field for the TE.

The gameplan for E. Ill was pretty vanilla both offensively and defensively. I thought the Hawks just stayed with the basic plays and didn't show too much today. The two reverses were gifts for DJK and McNutt because they hadn't gotten their touches.
All in all it was a workman type of game, nothing special just go out there work on the basics and get through it uninjured.
Iowa will open up the playbook going forward as the competition gets better.

Agree with the OP, although I'm also recalling an INC Stanzi threw over the middle where he seemed to badly overthrow his receiver (DJK?, tho I'm not sure). I groaned at that pass; chalked it up to the first game.

I'll chime in a few other notables.

Clayborn absolutely blew up one of the wedge blockers on an EIU Punt.

James Morris was the missle on kick off coverage in the 2nd half and on a 4th quarter kick off came within inches of completely blowing up the returner. I look forward to a few of those this season.

I got the feeling that Iowa was managing the game after the first quarter somewhat like a controlled game tempo scrimmage. I think Iowa could have ultimately named the score on EIU but was really working on their bread and butter and fundamentals.

Don't recall any false starts and only one holding on the revamped O-line and that was good to see for a first game.

I think Jewell and Adam are going to go nuts this weekend.

It was a typical opening day. Kirk wanted to work on the basics and build from there. They showed nothing, got a good days work in and next week they will show a little more.

Iowa didn't have a holding call; the only penalty called on the Hawks was for an illegal shift in (I think) the 3rd quarter. If you wanted to pick nits, you could say they got called for two as Iowa was offsides on the play where EIU got their touchdown.

Adam Robinson is one of my favorite Hawks of all time...He is exhibit #1 why 40 times don't matter. Adam will not beat too many guys over 40 yards, but if it is 3rd and 9 and he gets a check-dn pass from Stanzi that is 8 yards away from the first down, Adam will throw off tacklers much bigger than he is and fight like a wild animal to get the first down. Getting those conversions are huge in the course of a game and if it is 1 yd or 12 yds, Adam is the guy I want with the ball in his hands because of his determination.

After reading Ferentz' comments, I think he is quickly becoming one of KF's favs as well. Grt job with the interview on the BTN, too. Articulate and looked sharp in his shirt and tie.

Robinson reminds me of Norm Granger based on athlitisism/productivity and determination. Granger wasn't a guy who was going to scare anyone int game planning around him but at the end of the day he was usually the most productive back on the fiend that day.

Jail break screen- was surprised to see it, there was a jr high kid sitting in front of us and he did not call it before the play!- KOK must be switching it up enough now that we cannot predict our offense LOL. ("draw" on third and long sticks out in my head:)

After watching in person and reviewing the telecast I came away the thought that this team looks like a 9 win football team with the potential for more with good health and fortunate breaks.

We will find out a lot about this team in the next 2 weeks. ISU continues to get better and will not be a push over. Plus it's a rivalry game. Arizona looked real good on the road at Toledo. The BigTen schedule is going to be even tougher than I first thought since Michigan looks dangerous this year.

The two biggest concerns I have are middle linebacker and center. I'm not saying I was unimpressed by either but I did not see enough yet to determine that we are solid in those spots. I noticed at least 3-4 times where the EIU noseguard was head up on JF and he was pushed 2-3 yards into the backfield. He did a good job when he was able to roam downfield and pick off linebackers and his technique looks very good but he will be playing undersized. That is always a concern to me at any of the o-line positions. At middle line backer I want to see a ball hawk and I did not see enough Saturday to note that. Others are calling for Tarp but he's just as inexperienced at the MLB spot as Davis or Johnson so that remains a big question in my mind. Again, not saying Davis or Johnson did not do well. I just have not seen enough yet to know if they can clean up on inside zone read plays/hand offs.

Positives in no particular order....
- Stanzi looked real good at times.
- Vandenburg looked more mature and a guy ready to play when called on
- Robinson ran tough and did an even better job of cutting and picking his feet up than last year. Can't wait to add Jewel as that could be an awesome tandom.
- TE's looked good and we are deep at that position
- O-Line.... I really, really, really liked the looks of plugging McMillan at the guard position. I thought he played well for a first start. He had a couple of mistakes but his size and agility are going to make him special. This O-Line has a real chance to be very good not only later this year but in the coming years. The second team has some additional players that will be in the mix. Rieff, JV, Z did real well also. JF needs to add more weight for leverage but that will take some time. Very promising for this season and in the future.
- D-Line was stout
- Secondary - Safties are good, corners look decent
- Punter,,, not worried
- Kicker,,,, Kickoffs were deep and very high which was excellent. Mossbruker look good on the PAT's but need to see him on pressure FG attempt.
- Linebackers... Hunter was hunter, Neilson is able to cover some ground. Just needs a little work on finishing a tackle and pursuit angles. Like what I saw from him though.
