Thoughts on incoming true freshman

The 4 star guys in the incoming class:

Rodney Coe - I think he will play right away and become the primary backup to Coker by the end of the year

Ray Hamilton - TE - I think he is a good enough athlete to see time on special teams this year (much like CJ Fied did this year).

Jordan Walsh (OL) & Austin Blythe (OL) - I think both guys will redshirt as O-line should be a strong point for the team this fall and I think there is enough depth on the line to not need to use either of these highly regarded prospects.

The most well known 3 star guys in the incoming Class:

Jake Rudock (QB) - Eventually see this guy as a potential 3 yr starter but will redshirt in '11
Darian Cooper (DT) - Good shot to see the field this year and could get a lot of PT.
MiKail McCall - (RB) - Might see some time depending on the health of the other RB's
Nicholas Law (DB) - Could see some time, especially at Safety
Marcus Grant (WR) - Good chance to earn some playing time if he has a good training camp
Dan Heiar (OL) - JUCO player who might see considerable playing time and maybe become the next Marshall Yanda for the Hawks

I think this class will go down as one of the best in the Ferentz era - with a chance to produce some BIG stars down the road.

Aren't both our top two QB's seniors? I don't see Jake getting any game time, but after this upcoming season, where would we be at for game time exeperiance?

Weinke and JVB are both redshirt Juniors next year. They each have 2 years.

I would also put Alston in there as potential PT at LB, and him and Spears both on ST.

I think most of the freshman have potential on ST, Duzey, Campbell, etc. I don't think many get true reps. Those will probably be McCall, Coe (if they keep him at RB) and Cooper.

Shouldn't you be working instead of posting about Hawkeye football?

Let's talk about Hawkeye basketball instead?

Why wouldn't we talk about the sport that comes next? Bball is over, the only thing that still matters is what recruits we are bringing in.

If Hyde ends up at safety like some folks have been suggesting ... then my guess is that Campbell and/or Lomax will have a terrific chance to see the field early too.

I'm looking for 2 LB-types to see the field early ... at the very least on special teams. The guys who are physically the most ready in that regard are Alston and Spears. However, I wouldn't be shocked if Collins or Lowdermilk surprised folks and earned early action on special teams. You don't have to be "huge" to play on special teams.

I'm still pretty intrigued about what is going on concerning Donavan Johnson. It wasn't that long ago when rumors were swirling about him not making the grade. I'm hoping that he gets his academic ducks in a row ... because I think that he has the potential to be a great contributer for us.

I'm also intrigued about the development of Hardy. I'd absolutely love it if he were to become our own version of JJ Watt. The kid is big and athletic ... just like Watt. However, for those same reasons ... that could be why many folks anticipate that he ends up on the OL too. I think that is part of the reason why Carl Davis was getting kept in the loop so early on at DT ... because if things weren't to "click" for him, he's also a guy who projects really nicely to the OL.

I like the idea of Jake starting for three years. That dude is a winner. I have a feeling that we will need to recruit some talent at wr he had some studs at st. Thomas.

We are all feeling like Derby has NO shot at QB? I haven't seen him practice but nobody is giving him a chance.

I've not seen much of him since he was in high school. But he was VERY rough around the edges in HS. Rudock is a very polished player, much more mechanically sound than Derby, and pretty athletic, too.

Maybe Derby will prove us wrong. But I have a hard time seeing him improve THAT much.

He was recruited as a great athlete. His performance at qb wasn't impressive enough to deserve a scholly. If he proves everyone wrong and plays at a high level as qb, wonderful!!!

I don't expect that to happen.

Really liking what I'm seeing from Cooper on twitter. Really working hard and getting ready to contribute, gotta love it.

Homer I agree with your analysis. I see Hardy as being a huge player out of the gate. He will be on the level of a Greenway, or Clayborn, or any other dominate player of the last 11 years. I thought he was a huge get when we got him. Also, I live in Florida and have personally watched Campbell play and this kid is an unreal athlete. I think he may see the field as a freshman now that KF has gone to playing freshman. Remeber when he would not let them see the field? He has learned from the last 11 years. I see some very good things this year.
