Thoughts for today's game

Yes or no. Have you ever heard of a decent player who was unable to perform because of "nerves" in real games?

I'm sure a lot of people never preform to their max potential because of nerves. On a scale of 1 to 10 , a 5 could easily play like a 2 when nervous. Nerves aren't going to make a 10 play like a 2 or anything but it can make lots of players play under their skill level. They can also go away with experience.

It's the same as people sucking in the big game, lots of great players do it. It's called choking and its due to nerves. Some people get better the bigger the stage is, like Michael Jordan.

Do you think Gabe's problem is that he's "playing under his skill level"? What has he done that would lead anyone to believe that he has a higher skill lever than what he has shown? It's not like a James Vandenberg situation where he has demonstrated talent but then lost it.

Again, not hating on the guy, but what on Earth do you guys see that I don't?

Give it up Ghost. In addition to me, 3 or 4 other posters seem to have addressed your question about nerves and put it right back in your face. This entire argument started with the comment Gabe brings it in practice. PERIOD. You cant seem to understand nor accept that just maybe it's a fact he does indeed bring it in practice, but struggles to bring it when it counts. Why? Because you havent seen it with your own two eyes and it's clear you are NEVER wrong in your mind. Your act is getting pretty old on here.

Dontrelle Willis is the only one that comes to mind for me.

Nerves might be oversimplifying it. But I'm sure it's not hard to find a decent player who, for whatever reason, can't put things together when it counts. Plenty of guys have all the physical tools to succeed and just don't come through. That happens all the time, at just about every level.

Willis had some issues. Also, Kahlil Greene (See below). I am not saying GO has this, but it has happened in sports.

No, my act is pretty solid. I have many issues, but my act is not one of them.

Let's just agree to disagree. I'll accept your premise that he's a really good player in practice, if you'll accept mine that he can't play in games and shouldn't see the floor.

I'm seeing the same thing as you are. The main difference is how we view Fran's hyber hole. I think he exaggerates and you must think he strait up lies. Also you can see Gabe plays to fast. He runs around like a chicken with his head cut off. That is usually due to inexperience and nerves.

I have many issues also Ghost. No harm. No foul. And I can't disagree with your last post with the exception Fran has to find minutes for Gabe in order to see if indeed he can improve. Limited minutes? yes. But he's gotta play some or else we will never know if he will be a contributor or not.

I see a guy who is 6'11 with a huge wing span; it's easy to see that with my own eyes.
I also see a guy who is wildly inexperienced.

Fran's in a tough spot: GO's not producing, but to produce he has to get that experience.

Games like today are good for that if nothing else.

Also that shot Gabe took towards the end of the game looked pretty smooth and very hard to defend. If that's the Gabe that Fran sees in practice, I think he should be using every opportunity he can to get him as much experience as possible. Which is exactly what he's doing.

Ghost. Now let's butt heads and let me read your observations after 8 games about Woodbury. Thoughts?

He's exceeding my expectations. While I did not expect much from him from a scoring standpoint, I love his rebounding and passing. I think he needs to shoot more. We're obviously a better team when he's on the floor.

Come on, Ghost, it bothers you that Fran hypes one of his players, particularly one whose confidence apparently needs all the help it can get? That's what every good coach should be doing, at least publicly, for all their athletes. It's what teachers should be doing for their students and what parents should be doing for their children. Life too often tears us down; good to have someone in our corner to keep us strong or build us back up.

I would be more concerned if Fran pulled a Ferentz and RELIED too heavily or too long on a player who wasn't getting it done. Unlike our currently woeful football program, Fran seems to have confidence, courage and coaching skills to move around the pieces to see what's going to work in a particular game or situation.

Gabe is clearly a project. The experience difference between him and Adam when the lights are on couldn't be more stark. But Gabe also appears to have the size and tools to be a contributor. There certainly is a role for him on this team, one that will be instantly magnified should something happen (shudder to think) to Adam. He needs minutes, especially in games like today's.

Gabe's problem is he gets down on himself to hard after he males a mistake, he needs to relax and just go with the flow, develope the attitude Stanzi had " make a mistake forget it and move on"
Gabe played 15 minutes getting 6 pts, 1-2 from the feild and 4-4 fron the line with 3 blocks, and Bobby Hanson said it looked like today he was not forcing anything,

So does that mean he wasnt down on himself after he males a mistake and develope the Stanzi tude?
If so double double by mid season

Im one who pays no attention to what Fran says about practice. He said Matt Gatens was the most dominating player hes ever been around and that Eric May was the teams best player last year. Whatever, I get it, hes a promoter.

What actually lent credence to Frans hype was the way GO dominated against Jaryd Cole on the offensive end in the PTL. Yeah PTL whatever but Cole was not taking it easy on him he just couldn't do anything to stop Gabe.

Now thats not a team defensive situation, just pretty much one on one but I have not seen Gabe look anything even resembling comfortable yet.

Hes got skills that have not shown up yet, well see if they ever do. It might be another year away.

To me he looks way to passive and yet is still managing to make stupid fouls which is kind of a self perpetuating problem.
