Thought about going forward and Next year

As the game was winding down (thank God) I started wondering about next week and next year. Watching Iowa has become "Painful" as we all know. The description one National Broadcaster gave "Abysmal" probably is the best when describing our offense, although I have heard a lot of other negative ones from the National press.

It is entirely possible that a very bad Northwestern team could win next week. I just don't think we can score against anyone. That really may be the best thing as it would pretty much seal a major change at year end. So how about next year?

We lose maybe the best linebacker and classy leader in Campell. Also Benson Merriweather LaPorta Shannon and Moss plus a few others which isn't a mass loss, but unfortunately as we used to say in the FXL days 4X0=0. which means just because we had a lot of young players doesn't mean we are going to be good when they are older.

Our first 2 QBs will be gone. Normally bad but obviously not in this case. But who will be QB? Haven't seen him play but how good can Labas be? Don't think we have a lot of options. Any new recruits who are good enough to play?
Our offensive line is as bad as it gets. I know we have recruited a couple of top offensive lineman (if they sign) WRs are just about non existent and I don't think we have a bunch coming in. On top of all this one has to believe we could lose through the portal and likely not pick up anyone

Ferentz has bounced back before but this will be tougher. If he keeps his Son he is done period. If he dumps him and hires another Offensive Coordinator I fear it will be some old guy that thinks like him and even if not it will be a change in offense to be learned. He has done a great job at Iowa over his tenure but I hate to think he could go out at the bottom and take the program with him.

Iowa could go 5-0 the rest of the way out and that's not going to be good enough for me personally. Even if that ends up being the case, I will obviously be happy, but I'd still want a change at OC. Frankly though, I just don't know that they can be consistent enough to win the next 5. When you're margin for error is razor thin and your O is this bad, it's going to be very difficult to string together consistent winning football.

I see a win next week but not any of the others.

And I’m not even sure about NW. they have a pretty decent Maryland team a tough go of it Saturday.

............and if they take a loss to NW, then it's going to be a constant challenge to keep the locker room and the players up and focused. This is a very delicate time for a team that is under performing.

Yup and I agree it's by no means a given. We literally can't score on O. It just doesn't take much to beat us and that opens the door for everyone to beat us frankly. Can we beat NW 13 to 6? Yup we sure could. Can we lose 17 to 3? Yup just as easily. There's a better chance Iowa loses out all 5 games rather then winning all 5 or hell winning 3 out of em.

Is there a difference when defining a great job as wins/losses or does nepotism, scandal coverup, Doylization, endless extensions factor in the equation?

This. Build up the house to only burn it down would be a sad ending indeed.

The party is over, there is zero chance we fix the offense with Brian as the OC and there is zero chance he gets fired.

I predict Kirk survives 2 years after this one due to the booster support.

3 straight years of the worst offense in football and no bowls will eventually make them turn.

This year. Next year has too many unknowns for me to guess right now. I take that back we know the defense will be good.:)
I get it. Yet next year, no Mich, no OSU, but we are at PSU and Bucky's house. In the past I might be hoping for a 10-2 season, or better, given Wisconsin is trending down as well....but if the dumpster fire we have this year overflows into next, we could conceivably waste a favorable schedule. Not like that's NEVER happened before............

This can't be that hard, right? Bring in someone with an innovating, exciting offense. Lean on your D for a few more years while the offensive talent accrues. Win national championships. So simple.

Okay, maybe not that simple, but it seems like a RADICAL shift in offensive philosophy would cure many ills. I looked at the top scoring offenses in DII, picked 4 from the top-10 that were from midwestern schools. Pick one out of a hat and roll with him, there is no way it could be worse than current:

I agree with ya and it sounds like a good plan. The only way it works is if KF recognizes that is not his strong point and hands the offensive keys to car to the new OC and gets the hell out of the way and let the guy work his magic.

If KF can't help himself and tries to infuse his philosophy, Iowa will just be stuck in that 85-121 O ranking range such as in the past. Hell, I'd welcome 85 at this point, but you understand what I am getting at.

Thoughts about things going forward are bleak at best. Not saying the offense can't atleast improve, although i'm doubtful, but in the past when our offense struggles I atleast thought we could get enough yards to flip the field and pin them deep or at least get into field goal range. Now it's like, for the life of me, I can't even see us putting together enough plays to move into field goal range. I guess that's my view of where I see the program; specifically the offense. While I never expected TD's, I just kind of assumed field goals and not empty possessions. Now I simply see our offense taking on the role of the media time out and symbolizing a period of time to fill in which our defense isn't on the field.

I think I see a way forward with Brian staying as offensive coordinator, instead of Iowa's promotions during the commercials they save them for when Iowa is on offense. The burrito lift, the smile cam, maybe even the "Wave" during key negative yardage plays. Possible the fans win a contest where they can choose a play they get to choose between jet sweep, reverse, or 20 yard sack. Hey guys, this could be fun.
