Those saying to tamper optimism of Gesell

Why should we tamper optimism for a guy who was a 4* recruit, top 100 player, Nebraska all-time leading scorer, 2-time Nebraska Mr. Basketball, Parade All-American and starting point guard for the North squad at the all-american championship at the final four? And to top it off a 4.0 student.

Kid's a program changer. Time to get excited.

I will agree with that. Especially since that was the one position we needed to fill, allowing Marble to move to a different position. It is going to be a fun year. Fran can bring all the hyperbole that he wants.

I hate the nattering naysayers that tell us to temper expectations.....So stupid. The fans want to get excited. It doesn't mean that we can't separate our feelings of excitement and what the actual level of play will be. I am EXCITED that we have a young talented team. I am EXCITED that we should see some good basketball played. I'm EXCITED that we might be able to get back to the NCAA tourney. I will NOT be down on this team if they don't make the tourney or struggle through the year.

It is pretty easy. High optimism, along with realistic expectations......now shut up and quit telling me to TAMPER anything! :D

BTW good thread franstheman

Good post, it's really only a vocal minority who is saying this but you're exactly right. Gesell is not some one star no name recruit who we are hyping. The kid is a big time recruit, higher rated than Trey Burke last year. These are the kind of recruits who come in and start and succeed right away. It's about time Iowa started players like this.

Like I said yesterday, after an exhibition game against Quincy, he was, among other things, called the best Iowa PG of all time and compared favorably to Jimmer Freddette and Steph Curry. There is a difference between reasonable expectations and stupid expectations. Expecting MG to be Jimmer Fredette is like a new groom expecting a hummer each night of his life from his new bride.

Yes, we should be excited that we have a highly ranked PG, which is a position of need, and it looks like we have a good one. However, keep in mind, that he is only the 3rd highest ranked HS PG coming into the BoneG this year. Yeah, he could make a Trey Burke impact this year, but so could Yogi Ferrell at Indiana, or Ronnie Johnson and Purdue.

Despite what Deanvogs says, people are going to be mad if he's "just" Jeff Horner.

I agree! That doesn't mean Gesell won't have some ups and downs this year.. He is a freshman. But the kid is going to be a good player, and am sure he will do some good things this year. He is a 4* recruit.. We SHOULD be excited about him!

If he turns out to be "just" Jeff Horner, we will have ourselves a pretty good player.

Boy have times have changed. Do you know how funny that sounds on an Iowa message board someone getting all excited about a Nebraska Mr. Basketball, the bastion of 8 man football!

He may or may not be good, but the reference to Nebraska is hilarious. Nebraska sure gets a lot of respect around here. Show me someone with his skills and is Mr. Basketball of Ohio or IL or even Indiana and I'll be on board. Until then, I'll be part Missourian....show me.

He sort of reminds me of Todd Berkenpas without a flat shot. Horner, no he doesn't remind me of Horner.

He has to prove he can beat someone off the dribble that is fast, not eastern Nebby and west iowa competition.

He has to prove he can create a shot against quick defenders. His open jumper is almost pushed which will be easy to block against man to man unless he can beat someone that is quick.

Many of his passes are effective because he is beating west Iowa and east nebby competition off the dribble. The defense collapses and leaves the other player open.

AAU ball isn't a hotbed of defense. It's about displaying offensive skills, which he did quite well.

We shall see.

Just because Quincy is not a good team doesn't mean they don't have quick guards. I'm sure there will be a handful of teams that have a guard that can shut him down pretty good but he will also dominate quite a few games this year. There is more to basketball then being quick. Although he does seem pretty darn quick too.

I love this AAU is no defense line of thinking. You don't coach AAU and don't know and neither do I. But do you really think that players who go out and play no defense during AAU are getting offers from Bo Ryan, Coach K, Tom Izzo etc. ? Maybe it has something to do with the up-tempo nature of the games and the freak athletes that play in AAU tournaments moreso than the defensive talent of the players eh? Like Nerlens Noel, the #1 player int he country, his calling card is defense not his offense which is just alright. You really think he's not going into AAU games and playing great defense when that's what has made him #1? And yes MG did play against Nerlens at the All-American Championship at the final four.
