This Years Defense.

Man, they are salty. Who would have ever thought this coming into this season. The last time Iowa had to reload with 3 new LB's it was a down year with a learning curve. I like the mixture of veterans and young players on the D line as well.

Add into that mix with having two freshman playing CB and it's amazing how well they are doing with the influx of young players.

This only bodes well for the next few year's defenses at Iowa. It is looking very bright for that side of the field and Iowa does the best when the defense is a high level, in particular having the front 4 controlling the LOS and getting to the QB.

Agreed on the defense. I keep waiting for someone to exploit the young players at LB or CB, but to date it hasn't happened, other than may Moss in the first half against Minnesota. He's now playing with alot of confidence.

Next year's defense is going to be downright scary. Another year of experience for this young group...adding in a few big young tackles. Losing Hesse is going to hurt...and even more from a leadership perspective...but we are loaded at DE.

Think about the offense...losing Fant is a given...and losing the interior of the Oline will hurt...but you have four guys getting playing time inside, Banwart, and the two Paulsons. Throw in that I think Kallenberger will move inside with our current tackle position solidified and you have four now to replace three...plus some young studs from the last two classes.

Other than Fant...all the skill positions are back. Come on David Bell. Although watching Purdue the other night probably hurts our chances. They targeted Rondell Moore 17 times or something like that. Hard to beat that level of offense targeted at WRs.

As with both sides of the ball in football it starts in the trenches.

A great Dline can that can maintain leverage allows the linebackers to run free and make plays. A Dline that can generate pressure with 4 guys makes it much easier on a secondary.

With that being said there have been some pleasant surprises in both the linebacking group and the secondary, and did I mention that most of those guys are young and should be around for a couple more years? This defense should be in a good place for the next few years at least, and hopefully recruiting continues to improve as it has the last three years.

I think most of use expected the defensive line to be the strength of this team, but the defensive backs have been a nice surprise. The linebackers have been a small issue. But a much smaller issue than we expected. I think a lot of credit has to go to the coaching. They have made changes where needed, in personnel and alignments.

But I think against Purdue, Iowa's D backs and linebackers are going to get tested hard. If they come out of their looking good, we know this is a defense that can play with anyone in the country.

Dear Mr Bell:

You do not belong at Purdue. You will have no chance of being the alpha dog in their receiving corps with the presence of Rondell Moore. Also, there is no chance Coach Prohm stays for the length of your athletic tenure. The Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, and Indianapolis Colts will be looking for coaching replacements soon, and possibly Louisville and Pitt. Please reconsider and commit to Iowa.

Signed,

Epstein's mother.

Also the depth on D is impressive, and quality depth. The ability to move people around on the D also nice. There is a package where all 4 D ends are in the game at the same time, like a 3rd down. Hesse moves to a D tackle along with another and Epenessa and A Nelson play the ends. Athletic to stop the run and still get tot he QB if needed.

Yeah this year's d is pretty darn good. Excited for next year as well. I'm still pulling for Dixon. He might be fun to watch.
