This year the Rose Bowl what would you consider it to the basketball equivalent

for a post season? I thought the Big Ten Title Game this year felt like an Elite 8. But I don't think the Rose Bowl should be considered the NIT or even the equal of an NIT Championship game.....the NIT Championship winner does not get ranked in the Top 5. NIT feels like Beef O Brady bowl.

So, I still feel like the Rose Bowl feels like an extended Elite 8 game, but without the possiblity of becoming number 1. Win it and you could, depending how the games play out, finish as high as #2 (that would probably require some big time blow out games in the playoffs along with an impressive Iowa win over Stanford).

Ironically, even though we are not in the playoff, we can still finish in that final four slotting.

Would you rank the Rose Bowl as an Elite 8 equivalent or do you feel it is higher than that?
 
It can't be an NCAA bid, because unless you're in the final CFP final four, you have no chance to be a champion.

I would equate the Rose to a #1 NIT seeding. Even if you win the NIT, you're not the champion.

Yup...there are some residual positives. Good press. Kids can play longer. School gets some extra dough. Fans talk themselves into being content and the alumni dollars will continue to roll in. Coaches keep their job. Bars and other entertainment establishments make money on the fan-based commerce the faux tournament creates. A nice pat on the back and trophy for the glass case back home you can stare at in the middle of winter.

But you'll never be the champion.

Totally get what you are saying Seth as the Rose Bowl is not technically not a playoff game......but it has to be greater than that right...a high seed NIT team?! As i said, NIT teams do not get ranked into the top 5 if they win the NIT tournament.

Iowa would probably be a number 2 seed in the NCAA basketball tournament based on how the conference tournament ended in the football equivalent if the playoff included more teams.

It has to be better than the NIT in an accomplishment sense right?
 
Of course it is. He's just continuing his 8 hour long argument to convince everyone that playoffs are better than bowl games which everyone knew but he's still angry about it for some reason

I'd consider it the Elite 8 in the March tourney. Not as prestigious as the Final 4 but still quite an accomplishment just to get there.

But is that speak to more of a system problem as it relates to how NCAA is set-up to determines its champion.

I would define "compare it" as what that game you play stands for in the comparative sense and by winning that said game will take you in a comparative sense. In that case, even in the flawed set-up that will not allow a non-playoff team to win the title and only only allowing 4 teams to have a realistic chance at it, Iowa can still finish in the top 4...even as high as number 2 in the country....where in the comparative sense an NIT championship will not crown its winner in the top 5. NIT champion might get ranked 25 in the final poll, but will not be anywhere close to the top 5.

So, in that case, it would seem logical that the Rose Bowl game and the said winner of the Rose Bowl game would be higher in comparative sense than an NIT Champion.

And, the Rose Bowl, even in its set up this year is much harder to get into than getting a 1 seed in the NIT. The Iowa basketball has had several NITs in the past 25 years. That is why, all things considered, it feels like an Elite 8 equivalent situation.

I'd say like the NCAA final four consolation game they used to play. You are out of the running to be the Natty champion, but you are still playing in a high visible game for a superior ranking, playing a worthy opponent, and you get to possibly go out of the season as a winner!
 
Winning the Rose would be like losing in the final 4. You can't win the National Championship after you lose in the final 4 either. Losing the Rose would be like being a 1 seed and losing in the elite 8. Great season with a very unsatisfying ending.

Saturday night felt like '87 UNLV it was that gut wrenching. Back in '87 I cried I am a grown a$$ man now so I did not cry, but yeah, the Rose bowl feels like the elite 8.

This, exactly.

Making the college FB playoff would've been equivalent to making the Final Four in hoops IMO. 4 teams playing for it all. To come up just a bit short of that, in my mind, is Elite 8.

I'd agree with that. College football's system for success is just so weird compared to pretty much every sports league in the world. Bowl games aren't completely exhibition games because teams try to win and want to win (typically) and the stats count and it counts in your record but at the same time, winner doesn't get a national championship either.
 
I dunno, because it's going to be different on December 31st than it is today. Yesterday it felt like getting the #1 NIT seed, because in the scope of moving forward in THIS season it doesn't mean much. But once Gameday gets there and the parade goes and the tailgates are on, it won't feel like that. It's going to mean SOMETHING, but I'm not sure what. Maybe being in the finals of the Big 10 Basketball tournament? Tough question.
