This season was the last straw for me. I had to make my first post here today.......

I have followed Iowa football ever since I was a boy listening to the games on the radio while riding on the tractor with my Dad. Began following them closely in junior high and was a hawk crazy during my high school and college days. My respect for Hayden is immense. Even though he stayed on a bit too long, I'll always love him.

Fast forward to today. I will always be a hawk fan, but I have seen ferentz, (yes the f is not capitalized for a reason) for what he really is in the last several years. As a result of what I observed about him, I have made two observations:

1. His character. For years now he has deflected away his responsibility when anyone, and I mean anyone, is even the least bit critical of him. (think when Rob Howe questioned him that one time) The answer is usually lack of execution by the players or the other team is very good. If he ever does say he takes responsibility, you can tell that it's very, very clear he doesn't really mean it. For example, when he totally screwed away the Wisconsin game a few years back by totally letting the game clock run out. He did not take responsibility for it during the post game presser and it was like tuesday or wednesday when he finally said he took responsibility after every sportswriter in the state called him out on it. And like I said, you could tell he didn't mean it when he said it. And there are many more examples of him NOT taking responsibility when questioned on it. I think he has a bit of narcissist in him. I do not think he has good character. Men who have good character do not deflect away their responsibility.

2. His past strength, notice I said past strength, was recruiting and developing talent. His downfall as a coach has been: A) Choosing and going with offensive and defensive systems. We all know how horrible his offenses have been through his time at Iowa. While the defense has been over all good, they have consistently given up CLUTCH plays. B) He may be, and I think he is, the absolute worst game day coach in D-1 football. There are many examples, but I'll give one. Remember the Pitt game where he left Jake C. in when we all knew he was bad and that Stanzi would have done better? That decision cost us the game that day. Heck, even Jon Miller came on "Sound Off" that night and declared that Jake C. should not be the qb the rest of the season. The latest example would be today when he let the play clock run out when you are in a hurry up offense. If he was the coach of another team, I'd laugh at him for being such a pathetic game day coach. He's a horrible game day coach and has installed a very bad offensive system in his time and Iowa.

I am sure there will be some ferentz apologists that will kill me for stating what I have here today. Just remember that I never planned on ever posting here. The reason I did is because this program is in crisis. It's is in crisis directly because ferentz has been the coach too long and because he's not hungry any longer. Just look at him. And I would suppose it's human nature to lose your hunger when you are a very rich man and have had some success at your position in the last 14 years. Let me acknowledge that he had the best 10 year run of any Iowa coach, (he won 5 more games than Hayden did in the 80's, but he Iowa played one more game per season during that time too) but look at how bad he's let things get in the last few years.

In summary, this team is in trouble now. I believe it's in trouble because of ferentz' lack of leadership and ability to recruit good players. He needs to go. Yes, I know that Barta made a dumb move by giving him the contract he did. But aren't there some HUGE donors that could step in and buy him out? There are two very rich guys that I know of who are boosters, one in Des Moines and one in Ankeny. Anyway, he needs to go and if he can't be bought out, get used to Iowa getting not just getting beat but trounced like they have this year till he can be bought out.

Welcome to the group. Now all we need is 20 million dollars!

Re: This season was the last straw for me. I had to make my first post here today...

I agree, KF isn't hungry anymore and I doubt he puts in the hours he once did. But I doubt it has to do with being rich. Urban Meyer doesn't need any more money and he's got more drive than anyone. I would like to see someone like Fitzpatrick coaching here.

Maybe the new millionaires in Bondurant are Iowa fans and want to kick in some coin.

This. Say what you will about Fitzgerald and his hatred for Iowa. But he's a very good coach, and the best outside of Meyer in the B1G.

I think we should be careful when we assume that we know someone's motives.

Re: This season was the last straw for me. I had to make my first post here today...

Explain please.

I agree with your larger point. Great points. But when you say that you know he didn't mean someting....that's what made me reply that way. But to your point. I agree.

I'd like someone to point blank ask KF, who's responsible for the way this team is playing?

im so sorry now leave. You sound like a cyclown fan.

Re: This season was the last straw for me. I had to make my first post here today...

OP, we only lost by 12 on the road to a team with a winning record. I feel your pain...but we knew going into the season that we were going to be a troubled team this year. Some of your points may be valid, but I dont think you'll see much happen in that direction for at least a year or 2 more of these same sub-par results. We have the same talent we've come accustomed to having and seeing developed, and eventually flourishing in the big leagues...unfortunately, due to injuries, transfers, and attrition, the majority of these guys are not to a leadership (upperclassman) level...yet. They will be.

I too think that KF has been stubburn in his player development of the young guys, but I have not seen what is happening behind the scenes in practices. (I'd love to see some game pt for our backup qb's for my own eyes). But, I believe that the next couple of years (not games), should produce better results as some of our talent develops and matures. Schedules do not matter when you're good, and actually help out in the long run. We'll see, but the potential is there for now...moreso than the buy-out money...to see how those next couple of years pan out with the man who got the players there.

While we all are disappointed and would prefer W's, easy wins, and big bowl games, sometimes you have to feel the ebbs to appreciate (and get to) the flows. Unfortunately, our ebbs seem deepened by a lack of clock mgmt, play calling, and igniting emotion. Good luck with your way of showing patience and coping.

"we only lost by 12 on the road to a team with a winning record."

This way of thinking is part of the problem. With 22 seconds to go in the 3rd qtr, Iowa had not scored a td against a defense that is bad. Ed P. even said on the radio that Northwestern had their 2nd and 3rd string d backs in today. This game was not nearly as close as the score indicated. Again, with 22 seconds to go in the 3rd qtr, Northwestern 28 - Iowa 3. Bottom line, this was a blow out again. Northwestern gave away the ball at the Iowa five yd line by a bad snap. It was not a forced error that caused this. They gave Iowa the ball. If no bad snap at that point, Northwestern goes up 35-10.

"Good luck with your way of showing patience and coping."

Lol..............I don't mean to laugh, but, lol, come on. Fans of a sports team forget about coping when the coach has sucked for a long time.

I'm not going to be an apologist and make excuses for the way the team is playing right now. They need help. And though most people seem to want to level the finger at a single person, be it KF, GD, JV or maybe someone's mother...the bottom line is there is plenty of blame to go around. And lay blame people are happy to do. Right or wrong, this board has become a heaping pile of criticism. Some of it's valid to a one degree or another. Some of it borders on the ridiculous.

Undoubtedly, you bring up some valid points. However, anyone who wants to connect coach Ferentz's character to the performance on the field (or lack thereof) has a serious problem with perspective. It's been a growing sentiment and it's ludicrous. Say what you will about his coaching ability. Believe he has an arrogance about his program or position. Heck, consider him dismissive of the fans if you want to. But, people, find enough reason and perspective within yourselves to be able to disconnect Ferentz the coach from Ferentz the person.

He may or may not be a lot of things as a coach. But as a person, Kirk Ferentz has always been first rate. Villainizing someone because of the way their team is playing on the field says far more about you as a person than them.

I would miss the Captens smart #$@ responses to reporters questions. What he is really saying with his snarky replies is... "Screw YOU... have you seen my contract?"
