This loss is on.......

the players. Too many second chance opportunities, sloppy with the ball in crucial spots, failure to close out on three point shooters. As poorly as they played, they still had a chance. But, they earned this loss as a team IMO.

Agree. I said pretty much the same thing in another thread.

I thought defensively Ogelsby and white got exposed. They couldn't hang with their guards and I hated the zone with as many shooters as they have.

Really didnt understand the zone against a team that plays so many on the perimiter.

We had one primary guy to stop, Stauskas, and really only one guy who could gaurd him, Marble.

This is the first time weve really missed Eric May this year.

I thought the game plan was lacking, Devs responsibility in this game should have been expend all energy blanketing stauskas and worry about that alone.

BINGO! I was foolish enough to think we had some upper-classmen on the bench who had gotten over their yips and were ready to provide solid minutes every night. But once again, Zach McCabe on the road played like ... Zach McCabe on the road. Same for Josh Oglesby. Same for Gabe Olasani.

I dont understand playing Mcabe over Uthoff, honestly ever, let alone for long stretches in a close game against a good team.

Agree. There some guys in suits on the bench that are supposed to figure this stuff out. Thought Dev played good D on the DB from Canada.

the team. There were a lot of guys who didn't play well and didn't lead. We need more from our bench and much like Baylor we struggle against very athletic teams. Michigan isn't long and we may have missed an opportunity to take better advantage of that. Mel and Woody showed up early and kept us in it, but several others fell short.

The season isn't over. Let's get NW and then MSU.

I see few similarities between those two teams. Michigans not any more athletic than the majority of the conference, just more perimiter oriented.

Iowa has 4 times now tried to play their running game against teams that play small ball and lost.

When we play 3 post players at once we cant outrun a team thats playing 4 guards.

Thought the zone was good strategy in first half - went to it when McCabe came in - no one for him to match up with. Michigan really puts you in tough spot w/ pick n roll game at top of key and shooters in the corners - as they showed on TV - they've done this to everyone this year - needs to be solve before the rematch.

I dont hate Zach but Im not sure putting him out there is always a productive option.

He was trying to find the hot hand. Both Uthoff and Olaseni looked lost on the court, both of them kept getting out of position defensively and that inbounds pass by Olaseni really hurt.

Uthoff really needs to develop an attitude. He is so soft with the ball and often is stripped easily much like Woodbury. I really don't get it. If I had that kind of length and ability, I'd be looking to tear the rim down everytime I was 1ft from the basket like Basabe does. This going up for soft layup crap has to stop. It doesn't fly in college bball.

White ended up with 17.. I'll take it. But Marble had 13 (below his average) and made some bad decisions on fast breaks in the 2nd half. He didn't have a good game IMO. On the flip side, Michigan's best player went off for a career high. Too many second opportunities given to Michigan as well IMO. Too many times our 3's were half way down and back out, and theirs found the bottom of the net. Guess that's pretty much the stuff I look at from last night.

Tough loss, but hardly a tragedy losing to a team that's undefeated in conference. So maybe Iowa doesn't win the Big Ten, but there's still an awful lot to play for, like a good NCAA seed and a tournament run.

Not saying that you're wrong here, but way to much basketball to write them off. They've still got a shot at winning the Big Ten, but its getting tougher and thougher to do so. We need Sparty to get one back for us and then take care of business the rest of the way (including Sparty).

All good points, some of Marbles problems offensively was the amount of attention he got from Michigan defenders. He was constantly being double teamed and White did not decide to take over until there were about 5 minutes left in the game. Nobody was stepping up out on the perimeter, Oglesby only shot 1 three, Gesell did not even attempt a perimeter shot, along with White, Uthoff, and McCabe's struggles on the perimeter. Looking back on the game I am surprised Fran did not try Jok just to see if he could do something offensively. Once Michigan took away the inside game, nobody was attempting the perimeter shot, all Iowa had left was the drive to the hoop and hope to get fouled. When you have to resort to that on the road you are relying on officials to give you calls which does not happen very often on the road.

Yep, the good news is Iowa was 20 points better than last year with basically the same group of players. Playing in these environments will help Iowa later on. While I am disappointed in the loss there is a lot of basketball to be played yet.

...the whinyass people who proclaim the sky is falling because Iowa got beat at Michigan.

Well to be fair, we have the same group of players.... they were with out 3 first round NBA draft picks.

I don't see anyone doing this (at least not much in this thread). Most just pointing out why Iowa lost. It happens. At least it was to a good team on the road. Lots of ball left. Pound NW and take sparty in Carver and we're sitting pretty good. I just want to see certain players be more aggressive (cough) Gesell/Uthoff (cough). Gesell should've eaten Corky Albrecht's lunch all night long, but instead didn't attack and basically didn't even look for his shot. Same with Uthoff. The guy has a mismatch almost everytime he touches the ball. It's great that a lot of these guys have a "team first" attitude, but some, especially the above forementioned players, need to be more selfish and attack.

Agreed. Iowa needs a little help from the rest of the league and really can ill-afford to slip up much more, but they are not done. We're only a third of the way through the conference slate, so a lot can happen. Beat Michigan & MSU in Carver, and we're back in the thick of things.

One thing is for sure, Michigan & MSU play each other this weekend, so one of them will absorb a loss.
