This loss is a program sustainer

It sustains us as "pretty good" and occasionally "better than pretty good" program.

Confirms we'll never be elite despite what happened last year.

So, enjoy what we have. It's about as good as it's ever going to get.

I've said for a long time that Iowa is a mid-tier program that when things align right can rise up and when they don't, we see losses to bad teams and overall poor seasons.

Iowa just happens to be a mid-tier program that spends Elite-tier money on the program largely because of the valuable conference they are in and because they have a fan base that spends a lot of money on them.

So I agree completely. Today was unacceptable but I've learned to enjoy most Iowa wins. They're simply not a good enough program to take winning for granted. Today proved we can't even take beating an FCS team for granted anymore.

I don't even care that they're FCS. It was like losing to a bottom 3rd Big 10 team. Just another loss when we're a double digit favorite.

Iowa is a 2nd tier B1G team like Mich. St. and Wisconsin when things fall in line I just want Iowa to take advantage. A schedule like this year will never set up any better. Ferentz has done a lot of great things at Iowa it just seems like it could have been a little bit better. I get where Iowa sits in the college football landscape; I don't know, it is just frustrating.

This program is not in the same breath as UW or MSU over the last 10 years. Our fan base likes to think we are but we most certainly are not.

Iowa isn't on the same level as the Michigan schools, more like Minnesota or Nebraska in the last 10 years

Jon spoke a bit about Wisconsin in his podcast. They have taken full advantage of high expectations to advance their brand. When they had opportunities to raise their program they have. They've embraced high expectations & delivered. As has MSU.

Iowa has not. That is the major difference between the programs.

Iowa isn't on the same tier as MSU and Wisconsin. Those schools have won multiple Big Ten championships and Rose Bowls recently. LOT more consistent than Iowa over the years. They don't consistently lose to lower tier teams like Iowa does.

Then what's the point?

With our facilities, funding, fans, and IIRC hot coeds, there is no excuse for not at the very least being a perennial big ten west contender. At the LEAST. Hell we even have the talent. It's suckass, timid coaching.

Nebraska has players that want to win, Armstrong sucks but he put the team on his back and found a way to beat a decent FBS team same can't be said for our QB. 150 yards passing against one of the worst defenses in football doesn't cut it. We will always be like Minnesota

Actually last year did the opposite for me. We had never before won 12 games in a season. So if Klassy Feckless can surpass previous thresholds, then there is hope we can achieve even greater heights.

I think Iowa could be a perennial west contender and honestly have been since the B1G went to east/west 2 years ago.
In 2014 they controlled their own destiny with 2 home games left in the season and lost 2 close games.
In 2015 they ran the table.
Their best attribute is playing in a weak division. So if they can field even a decent team (see 2014) they will probably contend in the west. If they have a good QB (see 2015) they really have a good shot.
I would argue with you that Iowa has the talent. I think they're weak at the offensive skill positions. But I do agree that timid coaching holds them back. It keeps inferior teams in games and that will get you beat.

When's the last time Minnesota won a conference championship?? Have they played in the B1G championship game??

We may a notch below Wisc or MSU but we're still a notch above Minnesota and Nebraska since they've joined the B1G.

Northwestern really. Its such a bipolar school, can have 8-10 win season, get trounced in a bowl and then turn around and go 6-6.

Well stated. I'll enjoy a win even more now when I see them play in NJ next week.

We're going to find out what this team is made of and what the coaches are made of.

Can those young O-Linemen come along and play big boy football? We'll find out the same thing about the Defensive Ends as well. And can the coaches help them along?

Maybe Iowa will improve from here. Honestly, I don't think they will. They played a fairly clean game today, they just got beat. I see losses against WI, UM, MN and Nebraska

So Armstrong finding a way to win this one game after finding ways to lose half of his games over the last year is somehow better than CJ finding a way to win most of the games he's played but then not finding a way to win this one game where he didn't even get to attempt a throw the last 10 minutes of the game? CJ has been one of the best quarterbacks in the nation in the 4th quarter since he's been the starter. That's all he does is find ways to win. This game was out of his control because the defense couldn't get off the field in the 4th quarter. He had one chance and it was run, run, get crushed in 2 seconds.

Just like the MSU game last year. When he had his chance, he did what he had to do to win. Then the defense stayed on the field for the rest of the game.

It confirms that some fans make ridiculously broad judgements based on one game. This was just a fluke, and not represent this program overall. If these teams play 10 times chances are Iowa wins 9 of them. The phantom holding call likely cost Iowa a touchdown. Things like the bad snap on the critical 3rd and 3 are so rare for this program too. That would have probably had lead to points also. This game would have been over. I also rewatched the long qb run on the last ndsu drive there Jewel was being held, it was an obvious missed call. They got all the lucky breaks and all the calls in this one, it's an obvious fluke. Next week Iowa gets thier interior offensive line starters back and win!
