Pluses: Jobs galore, welcoming vibe
Minus: Cold winters
Unemployment at 4.3%? That's not a misprint: Ames is the home of Iowa State University, which employs 9,000, and there are lots of biotech and agriculture jobs nearby. Like many states, Iowa has trimmed university funding, but the school has not had to make drastic cuts.
If the people who live here get bored, they have only themselves to blame. Besides Iowa State's cultural and athletic offerings, Ames boasts 36 parks, a bustling shopping district, and a new aquatic center.
Sports are big in this town: The high school boys basketball team, girls tennis team, and girls golf team are state champions. But the friendliness of the community is what newcomers tend to remark upon most.




Found this on YAHOO thought it was funny didnt say one thing about ISU athletics just high school athletics and how is LAMES a top 10 place to live in the US c'mon yahoo news get real i'd rather live in ottumwa!!!
 
Clowns aside, Ames is a nice town/community.

BTW- perhaps read for comprehension as they did mention ISU athletics (or touched upon it)- "Besides Iowa State's cultural and athletic offerings"

There's NO WAY in H-E-you-know-what that I would live in Ottumwa by choice.

I live in Ames. It is not that great at all..

The shopping sucks, resturaunts suck, there are a few parks - whoopdy do. The streets are now inhabited by Chicago's finest refugees. 4.3% unemployment - I have to question those numbers.

There is more and more crime happening in Ames in the last couple of years mostly due to the introduction of section 8 housing. Gang activity is picking up and I expect it to grow even more.

Ankeny is a much better town that is similar in size.

I went to school in Ames and currently live in Ankeny. If you are complaining about the restaurants in Ames I'd hate to see your appraisal of what we have in Ankeny. And I like living in both places.

all you got is walmart and target cuz the mall has all outdated clothes and hand me downs from des moines that mall is pathetic if your xmas shopping for loved ones

At least Ankeny has a Wig & Pen. That alone makes its restaurant selection better than Ames. :)
