This game is tailor-made for "Old Kirk"

Just like boy-wonder Jordan Spieth can mis-hit a golf shot now and again, a great kicker like Koehn can miss a PAT. It happens.

If Spieth missed 3 of his last 6 or so 3 footers and barely lipped in a couple that he made, you can bet your *** announcers would be talking about him having the yips. It wouldn't mean they thought he sucked or was throwing him under the bus. It would just mean they noticed that he got into his own head a bit and struggled from short range. Even though Speith is a stud, the next 3 footer wouldn't be a freebie. Even if he made a 20 footer on 18 to win last weeks tourney.

Maybe the holder wasn't on his game?

I see and agree with your point....kind of. I am not disagreeing with the results. But 13 first down plays in the second half...all running, almost all up the middle. He was risk adverse, that is Old Kirk.

But it should be noted that those 13 plays yielded 130 yards, and that missing our top 2 tackles results in the QB getting killed almost every time he tried to drop back.

The simple truth is, if we are one-dimensional we can't win against good teams. So we're gonna have to keep passing to a certain degree, and we're gonna have to fix any o-line issues we have. Luckily that's not my job, my job is to assume that 4 million dollars buys us a guy who can fix issues. And so far, he has.

Sorry, typo on my part. Meant to say that the T injuries "resulted" in our QB getting creamed (as in, that is what was happening), not "results" in our QB getting creamed (as in, that is what will continue to happen). Agree that the coaches need to find some way to get it done. It will not be easy; a win in Evanston this week may go to the very top of the list of most impressive Ferentz victories, considering the circumstances.

This is just like the 7 got 6 game. Really tough road game where if we get by we have "easy" opponents for awhile after.

Iowa left points on the board against Illinois because Smith and Beathard didn't connect in the end zone (thrown slightly behind Smith), Beathard just missed Vandeberg on a fade to the NW corner, and Smith dropped a pass that would have led to a first down (and maybe a touchdown). That wasn't Kirk being conservative, it was just missed opportunities that left up to 15 points off the board. As far as sitting on a lead, Illinois couldn't stop Canzeri in the 4th quarter - that's smart football, not being unnecessarily conservative. If he was being unnecessarily conservative, he would have run the ball on 3rd and 5 instead of trying to hit Smith on the post move (it was open, Smith dropped it).

As far as Wisconsin, again, missed opportunities in the first half, although I would agree that the play calling got conservative in the second half.

ThunderHawk - we're on the same page on this one.

That throw behind J Smith was actually because of the official. If CJB leads him, the official knocks it down (or ducks/moves which probably impedes J Smith's vision enough to cause the same end result, anyway).
But as much as people are crediting "New Kirk", the credit really needs to go to the whole team and staff. Communication--as shown by adjustments being made, in-game, on both sides of the ball--is obviously excellent right now.
