Thinking about Field Goals and Distance?

Field goals have been worth three points forever regardless of distance. Recently the NFL moved the placement back for PAT's to make it more difficult to score one point. What if a field goal value was based on distance? What if a field goal was only worth two points inside the twenty five yard line, three between the twenty six and forty, and four beyond the forty?

A lot of interesting scenarios could unfold. You could actually try to lose yards on third down and be rewarded for it. If your behind by 3 points and your inside the 20 needing a yard on fourth down your force to go for the first down. Kind of a fun idea to kick around.

Long touchdown plays are not worth more than short ones. If you increase field goal points, the incentive to score TDs will decline. It might raise scoring but will make offenses more conservative. Makes for interesting fantasy football though.

You think KFz is satisfied with a FG now? Wait til a 35 yarder is worth 4 points.

I like this outlook. And field goals are never a certainty. And short PATs in college are never a certainty has last week minny and Iowa both missed one.

Leave it as is. If a team turns the ball over in their own territory and the other team only has to move it 10 yards and they get a FG then that is the negative from the turnover. If the turnover or a punt or kickoff leads to a long field and the opponent drives it 50 yards and gets a FG then they deserve it. Half a TD for doing good work on the field.

I just wish KF would have tried a few more FGs at Mich this year.
