Think about the last two years of Iowa Football

Hiring a guy Chig who can relate to players and watch over them means someone else isn't or doesn't care to.

I assume you're referring to Ferentz? Obviously the head coach of a BCS football team has ample free time to keep tabs on all 85 scholarship players 24/7.

I get what you are saying, but parents can be responsible for the actions of their children. Coaches can be at fault for the actions of their players. I tend to agree with DJL, at some point there is more than just kids being kids. Are the coaches taking the proper steps to preventing these problems? Are the coaches to hard on certain players and the players cant take the heat? Did the players not get what the coaches promised when they were recruited? We dont know the answers to those questions but to just assume the coaches are blameless seems a bit off to me.
There are a lot of reasons why the coaching staff could at least be partially responsible for the problems/defections of the players. If you dont think it is at least a possibility I think you might live in a cave.

The first statement I’m not sure what to say. I think it just shows we attack things from completely different angles…….you are okay with immediate assumptions and strong ones at that about, integrity.

I on the other hand am willing to look at the total landscape of college football (of which you and I are a part of with constant clamoring for wins and relevance) and see if we are going to blame KF we need to start with Les Miles and Nick Saban and Bobby Stoops and Pete Carroll and Mack Brown and heck even Paul Rhoads of which case now where are we going.

2nd and probably more importantly…as a parent I do think I have a HUGE responsibility in raising my kids right and in that vein I sometimes find myself wondering about the upbringing of those who I see get in trouble….

Now with that said and I guess this is what makes me different than 75% of those who post anonymously on a message board…….as soon as I do that I search my mind, my heart and my own failings and remember, there is such a thing as a poor parenting, but I and you have failed sooooooo often in our lives it’s pretty darn convenient for me or you to sit behind a key board and question much of anyone as far as things that are pretty unsubstantiated and hard to prove.

That’s just my thinking I guess and you’d be surprised to know I have a lot of glass in my house. Pretty aware of my own failings and how pompous and critical is for me to continually blame others.

I agree but then are the coaches making stupid decisions on who they recruit? Or are we just the unlucky recipient of recruits prone to making stupid decisions?
I think KF runs more of an NFL type program and is more distant from his players on a day to day basis than some other coaches in the B1G. Not saying this is the reason, but I dont see other B1G teams suffering from the legal problems/attrition problems as much as Iowa does (sans PSU after this year obviously).

I’m sincerely not trying to pick on you here, but seriously…..have you seen they man get choked up and emotional no less than 100 times. Have you seen the great things past players and coaches say about the man. You don’t get that by being “distantâ€. Again not trying to charge you up but man alive, this “NFL†WAY and constant critics from afar that immediately break down under cross examination just floor me.

And attrition worse than other Big 10 teams you’ve got to be kidding me right……Heck a kid at Illinois go shot this year. Minne, tOSU, Michigan, Nebbie, etc, etc….regular suspensions and defections.

Again I apologize, but the point here is. You are an Iowa fan and you probably aren’t an over the top college football freak like me and look at Yahoo headlines regularly. This is truly a sad deal, but one that we are in the same shark infested waters with every other team.

Putting any of this on Ferentz is laughable.

The man puts tireless hours into this program trying to dot every I and cross every T. He recruits with as much integrity as possible ( there are things I know he would prefer not to have to do). He speaks to as many people as possible and learns as much as he can about his recruits before offering.

Kids change during their college years. Many completely redefine themselves, most experiment in new things and all make key life decisions on a daily basis. I personally came out if college barely resembling the young man that went in.

Holding the head coach, who has a track record of hard work and integrity, responsible in any way for private transgressions of his athletes is crazy.

Please at least slow down and recognize that what we are seeing is the opposite of a coach who does not care, does not take the appropriate steps to maintain control of his program and does not care about doing it right.

If your frustrated with the football program at least be fair about it and criticise the real issues.

In this case, if you know the facts if the suspension, express your frustration at the poor decision made, the reaction to it or just disappointment at another transgression but quit piling on this staff for every possible thing.

They aren't perfect coaches ( there isn't one by the way) they make mistakes, but players getting in trouble despite all of their efforts to prevent that from happpening is not one of them.

I agree but then are the coaches making stupid decisions on who they recruit? Or are we just the unlucky recipient of recruits prone to making stupid decisions?

Here is another possibility. Our coaches don't just sweep it under the rug so they can continue to play their star players. You mess up at Iowa, you sit for a game. This is magnified going in to the bowl game because of the time off that the players get between the end of the season and the bowl game - idle hands and all of that.

You misunderstood my point....given the talent and everything that happened could the last two years have gone any worse? This has no bearing on what happened 30-40 years ago. Look at the last two years alone.

Last year we went from Rose Bowl hopes to losing Wegher, Hampton, ARob, DJK getting arrested for keeping a drug house, losing close games, etc etc. This year more of the same as far as defections and disappointment.

Obviously we couldve gone 0-22 and that wouldve been worse but given the talent and all the momentum after the OB win could things have really worked out much worse?

The lone bright spot was winning the Insight....thats it

I agree with your post and get what you are saying. The last two seasons have been very flat. On-field performance; departing players; losing games we should not lose ... I am a broken record but something is not right within. When it is all said and done it comes down to Kirk and his coaches. Are they not recruiting the right kids? Are they not getting enough talent? Why have so many players departed? Lots and lots of questions ... For Kirk's sake and his staff's sake, 2012 needs to be a step up from back-to-back dismal 7-5 seasons ...
