I think we are pretty much in agreement here. We all want to support the university/program/team/coaches and players for whichever university we cheer for. We want to think the very best of them, and support them to the bitter end, while demonizing opposing team.It's difficult to assign motives on the LP situation given Osborne's earlier success with turning guys around. I do remember at the time that there was a lot of cynicism and outrage directed at Osborne for allowing LP to play in the Fiesta Bowl. It did as you say tarnish his legacy regardless of what his overriding motives were. LP's rotten life after Nebraska certainly didn't help with the optics of it all.
But in the big picture, we are just fans, and this is just football. Some fans are alumni, some natives of the state, or some just like whatever team for whatever reason. When used properly, sports can be very positive and can effect certain people in some very good ways.
But when you look at life as a whole, the PSU scandal puts into perspective just how unimportant sports are.
