Theory on why McCaffery over Gregory

I guess at this point I don't see that reason for discussing this. We have our coach and most likely we'll never know the whole story. We can all debate and argue, but 5 years from now it won't make a difference, nor will we know whether Gregory would have been a better fit.

My guess is that Gregory could have at given Iowa a "nod" if he really wanted the job. I think he was a candidate, but not necessarily the #1 choice.

Don't know which is worse: "CougarLife" (scary) or "Don't Be Afraid To Score: Get a Vasectomy" (ouch--been there, done that).

As for the OP, it's all hindsight speculation. I thought Gregory would be great, but now I think Fran will be better.

I agree. After looking at the resumes of both coaches, I'm thinking it worked out better this way.

Why I'm elated it's Fran over Gregory - Fran WANTED the job, Gregory would have come for the $$$ rather than the passion. Also, this is the big one for me, Fran has taken 3 teams (Lehigh, UNC-Greensboro, Siena) to NCAA tourney a total of 5x. BTW, UNC-Greensboro hasn't been in since he's left (59-92 overall). Gregory has taken 1 team - Dayton - to NCAA tourney 2x. And one of the appearances was Gregory's first season (not his players). Fran has rebuilt BAD teams and taken them to tourney. That is more eye opening to me.

The only coach that would have been worth it is Pearl, but no way could we ever pay any bball coach more than Capt Kirk!

Gregory would have been fine by me, but even assuming the Dayton reporter's take is accurate, I think we got a break. If you gave Gregory and Fran the same group of athletes, based on their respective records I would bet on Fran to get more out of them than Gregory. If Fran can consistently recruit to Iowa at a level equal to or better than Lick's last class, we will be back in the NCAA tournament on a regular basis--even without expansion.

I actually agree with this. And this is coming from someone who had Gregory at the top of the list.

I can't believe I just typed that...

But seriously, the more I hear Coach McCaffery, the more I am excited about the hire.

Spank...I agree with you and I also really liked Gregory. The final piece for me was the fact Fran has rebuilt 3 programs already, where Gregory really hasn't had that experience. I think those experiences will benefit Fran greatly moving forward at Iowa.

I'm drinking the Fran kool-aid!

I agree with this, it seems like Gregory is looking for a "payday" while Fran wants to be at Iowa, I have no doubt he could have went to St. Johns and possibly made more money but he came to Iowa because he wanted to even though it could be less money.

Fran-berry flavored kool-aid!

I think Gregory would have been a solid hire also, and only time will tell if the whole timing deal ended up changing the destiny of the iowa bb program for the good or bad...guess that is why they play the games,eh?

I think Gregory might have been a bit more effective recruiting the midwest than Fran will be,at least in the short term...but I am holding out hope that Fran might be able to pull a few rabbits outta the hat from his east coast recruiting havens...if he could just get one bell cow type of eastern recruit to come to Iowa and have success, maybe he could establish a tiny pipeline from the east, that would be a bit of an unusual edge for Iowa bb over conference brethren...only time will tell.
