The sky is falling, lets all jump ship and talk about how good psu is, the hawks are underachieving big time lets get rid of Brands..... What's next guys settle down a little its December and by NO means do I want a team full of Freshman & Sophpmore's to peak in December. Here's some thoughts of reason for you guys!!!!

125: Steel wins this match 9 out of 10 times he knows what he did wrong and he WILL fix it!!!!! NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT HERE!!!!

133: I still think Moore is the guy, after all he has beaten Sentes but Clark was closer to beating a pretty high ranked kid(since everybody wants to go by rankings). Ramos maybe flassy or aggressive but I still think Moore gives us our best chance to be a AA.

141: Ballweg gives up a 3 point lead to a 5th year returning AAer, he loses to a guy that took Montel to overtime in Ohmaha by 2 on a call that should have put it into over time and everybody has given up on him. Seriously..... REDSHIRT FRESHMEN GUYS!!!! I really like where he is at right now and he will only get better.

149: ?????????????? BIG GAPING HOLE HERE GUYS, REALLY WISH CAREW WAS HERE!!!!

157: DSJ, Don't know what his deal is lately but between Brands and his DSJ's dad they will get it fixed. He is scary good and I still believe a possible finalist. By the way that is not a slam on DSJ's dad he is just the typical dad that will help his son in a Very good way, he's not a jerk and won't just yell at him is what I mean.

165: Finally Jans is the guy!!! Keep working hard and good things will come to him 165 is a 2 man show and after that its pretty open!!! Like 141 I really like the road he is on!!!

174: E. Lofthouse wrestled above his seed. He is improving and with Evans knocking on the door that will only help him!

184: GG, Honestly my biggest concern of the the year before the year started. But he has bought in and is living the lifestyle but might need to add some more muscle on. He reminds me a lot of Keddy where he is a work in progress. Remember before his backside problems he was a locked hands call away(which caused a lack of concentration)and thus the reversal and he is in the finals but that still not good enough, right.....

197: Lofthouse is a GREAT kid and works his tail off he got a bad draw on the backside and lost a close one to #1 seed. He'll be fine in arguably the weakest weight class out there

HWT: Who knows,..... I absolutely love how hard it is for a heavy to please our fans. Raising is working extremely hard and is getting better but I think Telford will pass him by.

In conclussion its all between the ears which is what the BEST COACH in the country said. Its fixable guys!!! See you all in March when it REALLY MATTERS!!!

It's hard for a heavy to please our fans because they haven't been living up to expectations. Fields was expected to become a legend and became a 1 time AA his senior year. Raising will be lucky to win more than a match at Nationals if he qualifies. I think everyone was pleased with Erickson.

I agree, it's like when Ballweg, Ramos, and GG all lost close matches, they gave up. they were all very close to making the championship bout, only to lose close matches, and then completely fall apart. I'm going to chalk this one up to a learning experience, they're really young, and they'll be ok. I'm ok with Mcdonough losing now and lighting his fire, and I really like EL and Janssen stepping up and winning some matches. LL and Rasing have to step up but it appears that both guys that LL lost to would both be top 10. I hope DSJ can get past whatever is bugging him.

No one is talking about the sky falling or jumping ship. That is hyperbole isn't it? No one but the Eastern rabble is taking this tourney as definitive of what the Hawks will do in March. That is just Hawk-hater propaganda. We hear this every year.
Nevertheless Tobini, losing many close matches or getting pinned is just not acceptable. Not to Hawkeye fans, and certainly not to Tom Brands. He will change this. You can bet your mom's life on that.

Tobini, while i like your positive nature, just like you don't want people to act like the sky is falling to stick your head in the sand and act like nothing is wrong isn't much better. This team clearly has some issues. They got 4th place at a tournament w/o 7 other top ten ranked teams (via intermat) and had 1 guy place above 5th. that is not good. and a difference from past years where guys had ups and downs they had always been guys who had proven results on a national level. This team has one guy with a proven track record and that is it. So yeah, i'm pretty nervous about where they are at. Of course i do agree that Brands will continue to get them to grow and experience will be a big key, but looking at them now, they have several holes all over their line up. It's also concerning that in Nate Moore's biggest opportunity to win his spot, he's having weight issues. Makes me wonder where his head is at.
Of course i agree that McD will be and is fine, but Precin is a total stud i think you're selling him a little short.
Montell coming back would be a huge shot in the arm for this team.
Also, I think there have been many HWTs over the years who have pleased hawk fans (Banach, Oostendorp, Mocco, Erickson, etc) I think Iowa fans just want aggressive attacking big men. same as every other weight.

The Heavyweight thing is what gets to me, because it was the style our heavyweights dropped out in, all three of our HWT's were eliminated on 1 point ot OT matches and when you have three guys in a tournament (3 guys who we were all pretty confident in) go out like that it leaves a bad taste, no one seperated themselves. Granted Johnson lost by 1 to tomei and telford lost a close one to mcmullan (whose going to be a stud) but I woudnt say that no heavyweight can make fans happy it's just that the Heavyweights (all three of them) are held to same standard all Iowa wrestlers are: Win the close ones. If you wear the black and gold and its a one point match in the third, its expected of you to be more physical, agressive, and conditioned then the opponent, which fans know will translate into victories, its not just lofty expectations for the heavies, its what we expect from anyone who wears the singlet.

Thank you! That is exactly what I'm talking about.

A few questions for the Voice of Reason:

Do you think we have a shot at a National Championship this year? We have one champion and there are some threats out there for him.

Other than McD, is there another weigtclass that you would bet your balls we get an AA?

Other than the Zalesky era, have you ever seen the Hawkeyes wrestle as bad as what we saw at Midlands?

Somethings can change from now to March, but people anticipate Midlands because they are traditionally a good guage on the team. We're not what we hoped we would be tobini, simple.

I agree with most of what you said, but who is saying it's time to get rid of Brands? That's the craziest thing I've heard on here in a long time! With that said, it's early, they're young and GO HAWKS!

getting rid of brands? must be football fans and think KF should be gone too

some iowa fans crack me up

Ok first off I know that nobody ever said anything about getting rid of Brands that was my what's next type thing. I agree with some that there was some disappointment but its not as bad as it seems guys.

Other AA's than STEEL that I would bet my balls on (LOL)

Nate Moore but he's not wrestling so I guess you can't count him.
DSJ is going to be fine and I would not bet against him.
Others that are close are Ramos, Janssen, Lofthouse and Gambrall
Longer shot in Ballweg

CRwrestling, would you "bet your balls" that the Hawks don't have any more AA's? Would you bet them that they have less than 3 AA's this year? I tend to think that we are closer to having 4-5 AA's than we are to having only 1. Most all of the problems from last week are mental and can be fixed.

The imfamous preseason quote from Brands was that the young guys would either "get tough or poop there pants." Obviously they dirtied there pants when things got tough last week after being tough early in the year. Remember that this was the first 2 day competition for the Hawks this year and the first real tough competition outside of ISU. They got down but now they have a lot of work to do to build back up. Now you know why they aren't going to National Duals the very next weekend. I look for this team to get tough and get on a roll to end the year. I don't know that they will win the national title but I think that they'll be top 5 and I wouldn't "bet my balls" that they can't get it done!!

Tobini's been the only one to make predictions after his Midlands assessment so I'll provide mine.

125- I'm not sure McD wins 9 out of 10 against Precin, but he's seen him and will know what to do next time. I'm going to predict 2nd at Nationals, because if rankings hold he'll face Precin in the semis and lose to Robles only because he's unfamiliar with him.

133- As President of the Tony Ramos fan club, I am willing to admit that it's time to let Clark take over (this is with the thought that Moore is not going to get another chance). Ramos is undersized and I think he should start his cutting now so that he can make 125 next year. I love the way he goes at it, but I believe Clark's defense may be able to allow him to place higher. 5-6 range at Nationals

141- When Marion is on the mat, I will adjust this weight. Ballweg is going to be good but he needs to get some confidence in his shot. He's got the attitude to be good and he doesn't quit, so if he starts shooting more be may be able to be a low AA.

149- I am willing to give elder Ballweg a pass as this was his first competition at his new weight and from what others were saying the cut was pretty hard. I think he gets better as the season goes on and will win a couple of matches on the backside at Nationals.

157- Was highly disappointed in DSJ. I remember Gable mentioning that he looks to his coaches when times get rough. I've only seen a couple of matches of him, but in high school and against ISU he looked confident and no one was going to beat him. Lately he's been off. I was pretty critical of him since, but there is talk that he has been injured. If indeed he is injured, then he may not heal in time this year if he keeps wrestling thru it. As of now, he probably wins a couple matches on the front side and loses the rest at nationals to miss being an AA.

165- I hope the decision has been made to leave Janssen in. I like guys who shoot rather than trying to counter. Kerr is good at the latter but he's not that good. If indeed Janssen is given the keys to the weight, I think his confidence grows and he pulls out 7-8 to AA.

174- I think that his confidence took a hit after he got waxed against Reader. If he can get on a roll and start to dominate he will be a good one. This could also be his last year in the lineup if Evans surpasses him. If he finishes high at Big Tens, then he will be an AA.

184- This weight is confusing, because GG apparently has bought in but is so inconsistent. As long as he gets a good draw and stays on the championship bracket, be can AA, but when he loses he will lose his confidence and not win another match at nationals.

197- I think he is going to surprise us in March. When his conditioning is in top gear and with his aggressiveness, he is bond to catch some breaks in Philly. Going out on a limb but a mid-tier AA.

HWT- In my opinion, things can only get better. I think he might be able to pull off a win on the front side and a couple on the backside and miss being an AA.

As a team, I'm not jumping off the bandwagon, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen this year. If these guys are as good as we think they are and Brands can fix whatever is ailing them (in my opinion, mental toughness) than they can make a run, if they get some help. I think we finish behind Cornell, PSU, and Ok St.

So what do the women who read on here have to bet with? Maybe we can lessen the testosterone laden posts so that both male and female as well as youth feel comfortable reading and posting here. Call it a "voice of reason" maybe.

So, the answer is no. We do not have another guy in the lineup that is a sure AA. I do agree that DSJ is the next surest thing we have, but whether it's injury or conditioning or both, he has some things to figure out. I'm also a little more optimistic on Ramos/Clark than you are.

I'm sure we'll have more than 1 AA, point is right now other than McD we don't have another sure thing to AA. We were 4th at Midlands, a meet w/o Cornell, PSU, Minnesota, Okie st. Look at those lineups and you can count quite a few sure AA's in each one.

I agree the Hawkeyes had a lot of mental issues last week. I hope you're right and they are easy to fix. We'll be much better at the end of the year, but we're not title contenders this year.
