The Unmentioned Topic: Isn't Davis In Charge of QB Decision?

I have been vocal in my disgust in Ferentz's personnel decisions over the years, with this year being no different. The playing time guys like Jake, Weisman, Bullock, and Vandenberg have received over more talented players has been a laughingstock of college football.

Today, when reading the Bethard comments, it occurred to me: Ferentz doesn't coach the offense. Ferentz is not the qb coach. We have a very very highly paid guy whose job is to design plays, recruit offensive players, watch them practice, and put the best players on the field. Who knows who our best personnel is better than the offensive coordinator? It is Davis, not Ferentz, who runs qb drills. It is Davis, not Ferentz, who sees these guys throw every pass they throw. It is therefore Davis who knows better than anyone else on the planet who our best QB is. If Bethard is the better QB, and I believe he is, who has more to lose than Davis to watch the offense sputter. It's HIS offense. Could Davis be that much of a pushover to allow Ferentz to hand select an inferior qb over a superior qb? Unlikely. Why isn't Davis taking any of the flack for the baffling personnel decisions? Running Weisman on sweeps? That's Davis. Playing a candy armed qb who checks down on every pass? Davis.

Kirk Ferentz decides who starts at QB and no one else. Greg Davis said he does not make the decision in the bye week interview. GD would be far more qualified to decide though since he has actually played QB and always been a QB coach.

I don't think it works that way, at least not at Iowa. Davis likely has input, but my guess is he's not in charge of the decision.

Really? You really think KF would leave that decision to Davis? Really? He may call some really stupid plays, but my guess is MW and JR are on the field for one reason, because that's who KF wants out there. I would think Davis would want a QB more suitable to his offense, but who knows, maybe they both love JR?

And if KF sat back and watched that garbage all year and didn't tell his OC to make a change, then he is still a fool. But that's not how it played out, and I am hoping you know that.

So it is everyone's contention that Kirt is all knowing and determines the 2 deeps on offense (22 guys), defense (22 more guys), and special teams (22 more guys)? Then what is the point of having an OL coach who watches nothing but OL. A LB coach who watches nothing but LBs. A RB coach who watches nothing but the RBs. A Special teams coach who watches nothing but special teams? Logically speaking, it would be those coaches who determines which guys play at their positions. Kirt only oversees. I am not saying logic prevails at the U of Iowa thanks to the lifetime contract Barta tied the school's hands with, but you would think that our QBs coach, Greg Davis, is the one who has a man crush on Jake and merely tells Kirt how dreamy Jake is in practice and how CJ is too sexy for Iowa football.

Do I think KF tells each coach who to start at each position? No, but he has final say. And the high profile positions are without a doubt mostly KF's decision with some advice from his other coaches. Let's not forget, there has been a time when everyone knew what QB the OC wanted, and what QB KF tried to get on the field. Eventually KF had to give in, though he was late to the party as usual.

IowaLaw, why does any coach have assistants? Because he can't coach all positions with the time allotted. But he does use his philosophy and passes that on. He can't specialize at every position but he does pay attention. Therefore, he may get input from assistant coaches but the final decision is his and at no point has there been any clues otherwise.

The way it works is, the position coaches pick the two deeps but the OC/DC can over rule. On game day the position coaches take over completely on subs. But at QB KF pretty much decides who plays period. Im not a GD fan but this is on KF. He does have himself in a mess

If the head coach doesn't have the final and only say that matters in who the QB is then why would that HC want to be one? Of course Davis has a ton of input and his opinion matters. But the starting qb decision is the head coaches point blank. You'll never see a head coach pass the buck to the OC and say anything along the lines of well shoulda played the other qb but the OC wanted him... Now does he set the depth chart in the secondary? Or punter? Prolly not I think he delegates to Phil a bunch. But I think when it comes to the all important QB spot that's all on KF.

this string tells one everything they need to know....read the qualifiers in different opinions -

' I think'; '____ pretty much decides'; 'Do I think'; 'I gotta believe'; 'my guess'; 'I don't think'; '___likely has input'

Really you football savants, really?

When someone is giving their opinion on what they think goes on, they use words like "I think", or "I gotta believe". Unless you are part of the coaching staff, you can't say with 100% certainty that you know what goes on. That would make you an arrogant a-hole. I can say with certainty that when I was the head coach of a youth football team I made the final personal decisions. But that doesn't make me an expert on what goes on inside Fort Kinnick. So I have to do some assuming based on common sense, what I hear, and opinion based on experiences.

Asked about leaving JR in all game during the Minnie debacle, KF answered "we talked about putting CJ in, but decided it wouldn't make any difference."

I have to think that when you are on a coaching staff, the QB position is no more high profile than any other position. Only us fans and the media focus on the QB. When you have a full coaching staff, the starting safety gets just as much instruction as the QB. Therefore, it wouldn't make sense for Kirt to step in and make a personnel decision on who starts at QB, but defer to his assistants as to who starts at safety or right guard or anything else. I think if Davis had any balls at all, and he believed CJ was the better QB, it would be 100% mandatory that he either start CJ or fight like hell to make sure the responsibility for poor offensive statistics are on Kirt. Our awful QB play reflects poorly on Davis and his career as a coordinator. Why would he take the fall for Ferentz's failure.

I honestly believe Davis preferred C.J., and they’d likely both be back next year if he would’ve gotten his way.

Davis has been here for three seasons and it JUST occurred to you? There are no words.
