The Search: Saturday Scuttlebut

Rob Howe of HawkeyeInsider.com talks about Pitt's Jamie Dixon a bit today. It's interesting how each day this week some of the same names rise up the message boards and the people that are tracking this. Yesterday was Dixon's day a bit. I received a call from someone that is paying close attention to all of this, and has some friends that are a bit removed from the action but still not citing anonymous message board posters...Dixon and his discontent with his contract was yesterday's conversation. I placed a few phone calls and what I heard back wasn't really substantive, which is the case on a lot of this...and left me feeling I was just dealing with an echo effect...

That being said, I put Dixon's name in GREEN the other day on the run down, meaning I think he is somewhere in between a long shot and a realistic candidate.

Last night and tweeted today, folks associated with HawkeyeReport.com (Kakert and Brommelkamp) have said there is some mutual interest between Iowa and Baylor coach Scott Drew. The folks I speak with have had Drew in their sights for a while, as a guy that Iowa should talk with, but nothing more...what I mean by that is not undercutting what others are saying about Drew's candidacy, rather, the people I am speaking with don't have any connections related to Drew's candidacy.

At this point in time, I would say that Dixon and Drew are the only two candidates that are established at BCS conference jobs that I think are possibilities. The Pearl trail has ended; he's not interested, and the fact that Forbes is lobbying hard for the job is your sign there. Draw a line through Jay Wright, not that I ever had any hope of that. I don't think Josh Pastner is a realistic candidate; he has the #1 recruiting class in the nation coming in next year and can probably turn that into a much better job in a year or two. I am not a Kevin Stallings guy and he could have had the job three years ago.

I also think that Tony Barbee is going to to either bide his time and stay at UTEP one more year, as they should be really good next year, or he will have other opportunities this year that may be more attractive to him.

If someone asked me to give them a three name group that I think the next coach at Iowa would come from, right now I'd say Dixon, Drew or Forbes. But I would wager anything of value on that ;)

Depending on what takes place this weekend in the tournament, next week could yield more nuggets and a faster pace..keep an eye on what happens with Pittsburgh, Baylor and Tennessee in the tournament this weekend.

Even then, I don't think that the Parker Search Firm would have had enough time to identify a list of candidates that are willing to talk as well as perform the due diligence on them by the time Monday rolls around. I think it's far more likely that the next Iowa coach will be announced the week of March 29th; Lickliter was announced on April 2nd, 2007.

One more thing to keep watching: the other jobs that are open or will be the next week or two...Right now, Iowa, Oregon, St Johns, Seton Hall and Auburn are the bigger names open. Say a Scott Drew and or Jamie Dixon takes the Oregon job before Iowa fills its position...then their job opens up, and Iowa has another school to compete with to fill their vacancy, etc.

I'll be on 'vacation' from my radio job that week, but I am never on vacation from HawkeyeNation.com and will have my phone and laptop with me all the while and I will be making and taking the calls and sharing what I know with you during that time.

DID YOU KNOW: how the term term scuttlebutt became associated with the word 'rumor'? It's a nautical term, meaning an open cask of water that the sailors would drink from...and then it became associated with rumor, because the sailors would gather around the scuttlebutt and discuss things taking place on the ship...so it was the nautical version of the water cooler...Goood Day!

LOL! Nice touch...Paul. :)

Since you will be on vacation the Week of the 29th. Say that odds are pretty good an announcement will come that week. :)

Exciting times indeed! Scott Drew or Jamie Dixon would absolutely make my day. Those wouldn't be home run hires - they would be grand slams, IMO. If all else falls through, it sounds like Forbes is itching to be our next coach, and I've read alot of good things about him.

I would love either Drew or Dixon.. :D

These are my top 3 names also. Dixon and Drew are interchangeable for me, and Steve Forbes is a great guy to fall back on.

I was just going to ask, who would you guys prefer between Drew or Dixon? Awfully tough choice. I do like the fact that Drew built Baylor from scratch. Dixon inherited a program that was already in good shape, but he's kept them at a very high level for several years now. Flip a coin for it.

Wasn't there a list last time we hired a coach that had names on it everyone was drooling over? Yeah Lick wasn't on that list. This is what makes me nervous. I'm not sure why, other than a gut feeling. But I feel Forbes is the guy for the job.

Jon: I see that the Oregon A.D. is stepping down on April 5th. Do they have someone already in place to take over. In other words who is actually going to make their hire ?

Is there any chance that if either Drew or Dixon took the job that Forbes might be asked to come on board as the associate head coach?? It would be a move upward from his current position and could put him in line for the job should the "big" hire move on in five years.

I think it is going to be difficult for Barta to demand a head assistant be hired for a home run hire.

The only way to really do so would be to suggest that he truly understands the history of the program and that we would like for him to at least get a call to discuss it.

Dixon, Drew and fallback Forbes are indeed pretty good choices. I would intertain the Lavin talks too. Just sayin what if he is interested.

Drew has worked a miracle at Baylor.

I don't consider Dixon to play an "uptempo" style...but for those craving more pound it inside then he could be your guy. The other thing about Dixon is that he does his thing and doesn't change dictated on what an opponent does.

While I definitely like an uptempo style, I do appreciate a good inside game with strong rebounding, etc. Lickliter's style was neither. So I think Dixon's style would have to be an improvement in my eyes, and it may very well fit well into what you typically see in the Big Ten.
