This is not rocket science. greg davis may have had a pass offense scheme that worked at one time, with the talent and circumstances he had at Texas, in a league that has never played defense. However, it is very clear, given his record as the O coordinator at Iowa for a 5 year period, where our offense has been generally bottom of the power 5 pile, that he just has not produced what needs to be done at Iowa to provide a winning program.
Of course he is a well known, skilled professional coach. You don't operate in his universe for as many years as he has, if you don't know what you are doing. But, he has not adjusted. His scheme does not work at Iowa. He has failed to help recruit quality receivers for the current football landscape. He has not developed QB's to a level for them to be successful. He has been helped by some good running backs, a very good O line, and a salty defense, which has resulted in a good number of wins (20) in the past two years. But, clearly, we are not in a position to be competitive with the best of the best.
I would argue that we have talent on defense that is competitive, see stats, rankings. We have an O line that is competitive. We have running backs (2 with a thousand yards plus this year) that are competitive. So, what can we all see that is missing? The last two years, CJ working under a severe injury ridden career in a questionable system, has won 20 games, or 78% of his starts. QB is not the problem. Receivers and the passing scheme are clearly the single biggest reasons we have not taken the step to be a national contender. (BTW, our special teams have been pretty darn good, too!)
I am absolutely astounded that we spend time arguing about anything other than the obvious. I am equally amazed that the athletic administration, including KF, who I believe is a very good football coach, have not addressed our weakness directly by replacing Greg and his receiver coach.
Get it done. Now.
