The roster next year

I think this is very important and an interesting decision for McCaffery. You don't want to run off players but at the same time you run a very different system then the previous coach and right now there is a very limited number of scholarships to use to make adjustments.

I would think a guy like Cougill may have a hard time. We are very big heavy in scholarships right now (Archie, Cougill, Brommer, Cole, Fuller and Larson all play 2 positions). Plus McCabe maybe a 4 in McCaffery's system (not sure on this).

Will he bring in somebody new for the 13th scholarship this year? Will certain players be asked to leave? The 2011 class is a big class for a first time coach building a program. For Lick it was Tucker, Gatens, Fuller and Brommer. Unfortonately he struck out on two of them. Right now with only one graduating senior it will be hard to make an impact in 2011 unless certain players are asked to leave.

If it were me I would bite the bullet and try and get at least one of three of Cougill, Brommer and Archie to leave. I would try and bring in another PG to help run a more uptempo system for next year. I would bank one scholarship and that way you would have at least two scholarships for 2011.

An Illinois friend of mine called me today...we talked about the roster next year and were talking up tempo...he said "That Cougill guy might have a hard time playing 94 feet since he only seems to go three point line to three point line."

That's harsh, and not entirely accurate, but I got his opinion...The role of some big's in Lick;s system were shooting rolls, high screening roles...I dont think that will be the same under Fran.

I think you have to keep Archie around. Sounds athletic, and if he can run up and down like the Baylor bigs I'd be ok with that.

I agree that the use of the bigs frustrated me greatly with Lick. He actually improved some this year as I thought they used more sets to get Fuller the ball. It will be interesting to see how McCaffery plays this. Clearly right now there is not a lot of room to make big adjustments. Does he think the current players can adjust to make it work? Hard to say.

The thing with Cougill, is that his game was being molded around what Lickliter wanted him to do in the offense, not necessarily what Brennan can do.

Having seen Siena play...

McCaffery will play to whatever favors him in a given game. When Siena was matched against a Kansas, they didn't go inside a whole lot since KU had much bigger guys inside (makes sense). But when they played a team like Ohio State, which had Lauderdale and then 4 guards, Siena went inside with regularity, both on post-ups and on dribble drives. You will see much, much more multiple ways that Iowa will try to score under this coach. The screen-roll game is a staple of every college team today, and Siena has some of that. But Siena also ran lots of set plays and away from the ball action, which we haven't seen a great deal of the past 3 years.
Siena also changed defenses constantly, varying the types of pressure and zone/man in half-court.
Not to get into a knocking of the Butler Way, as it obviously can and does work as demonstrated by Butler's making it to the Final Four. As with any system, McCaffery will need players to succeed. Can he get enough good ones to Iowa City? That is the question.

Coug's has some game but it rarely showed with Lick at the helm. We'll hav eto wait and see what FM can do with him or if they think he will fit better in a different system.

Wait your describing a coach that plays to his strengths and covers his weaknesses. Is there such a thing?

I see an opportunity for trailing three pointers for Cougs on the break (a-la Lohaus). Getting back on defense is a bigger concern, however.

I have a very strong feeling that Archie is already gone.

BC has some health issues that make it highly unlikely that he will be able to survive in this system. The issues are supposedly back related, but I was highly concerned with the way his feet looked when he ran down court last year. He looks like his arches might be bad. That will not work in an up-tempo system.

Jon's friend is quite right. I just don't ever see him getting to the paint in either direction.

Did this develop during the season?

I think the guys on the current roster can run an up tempo offense, even cougil if he conditions. Also Fran said in the presser he is going to re-recruit the current players and he is already familiar with some of the players.

I hope no one is "run off.' Especially an Iowa kid. If players decide to leave on their own for personal reasons that's completely different.
