The Real Future - Merge U of I and ISU

Well if Iowa State had some reform athletically...I would be fine with rebranding them...The University of Iowa-Ames

I find myself saying this a lot when I'm on these boards. This is one of the stupidest things I've ever read.

Why?

Do mergers and acquisitions not happen all the time in business? One larger entity combines or takes over a smaller entity for efficiency and strengthening the overall position of both. Why is this suddenly stupid when it comes to academics and athletics?

If the State of Iowa had no major collegiate institutions today and was going to be a new startup what would the proposed plan be today?

This situation is an opportunity to strengthen the overall positioning and performance for the future.

Sometimes less is more. You cannot combine 2 large universities each with 150+ years of tradition and just say, ok, you're the same now for athletics and academics. Do you play some games in Ames and some in Iowa City? What about the faculty, particularly the tenured faculty? Where do they go? How about the alumni? You just alienate them? You think a proud Iowa alum is going to donate money to a merged Iowa St/Iowa university? I doubt it. I won't. It cannot and will not work. There is no rationale behind it. It's a stupid idea. There are too many people with money and power on each side that would never allow it to happen. I know it's hypothetical and that is fine, but thankfully this idea will never make it past this message board.

Thank you. I understand your position better.

The plan was never to eliminate one set of faculty or decrease academic opportunities. In fact if you read my post I stated that both campuses should remain. I'm talking about joining forces in some way and capacity to strengthen the long term position. The pain is as you have described is both sides would have to sacrifice historical identity to get a better future in return.

haha I was kidding...I would disown Iowa if we associated ourselves with "that" school.

When I had to pick a college I was going into engineering...and some people that didn't know me very well were like "why not ISU??" If they knew me very well they knew ISU could've had the BEST program in the country and I wouldn't have gone...I BLEED black and gold lol. My immediate family possibly would have disowned me as well, they didn't raise a clown :)

Wouldn't it make more sense for ISU and UNI to combine? I ask without studying the scenario at all- I'll leave that to those with much more free time. If not, then that was a wasted idea this Monday morning.

If anything, because the University of Iowa has been around since the mid 1800s, ISU should just become a satellite of the University of Iowa. Similar to the systems that they have in Wisconsin and Minnesota--if there is to be one major University in the State.

This is dumb. The only thing that separate ISU and Iowa right now are their atheletics and location. As schools they essentially share state funding and resources. The only reason to join forces atheltically with ISU would be to save money and the UI doesn't need to worry about that. ISU needs to figure thier own way of being self sufficient, why on earth would the UI subsidize them?

If you are suggesting a consolidation of state university systems, wouldn't it make sense to put the primary campus as close as possible to the center of the state and the state capitol?

Be careful what you wish for.

This is a ridiculous idea. We ARE in the B10 now and the conference doesn't treat its members in a manner that would get us kicked out of the conference or left in the cold. The way the B10 works precludes a scenario like the one that is happening now in the B12. If we ever did find ourselves in that situation, THEN maybe we could consider what you are talking about.

All in all it is just a foolhardy notion to even consider, on so many levels.
