'The Pittsburgh Steelers of Iowa'

Quote from Darian Cooper, per the Washington Post

"I can't speak for everybody, but I know Iowa is an amazing place," Cooper said. "It's a lot slower pace. You feel the genuineness of people out there. When they say, 'Hey, how are you doing?' it's genuine. People aren't afraid to come up to me. In this area, you can get caught up in the hustle and bustle. They say Iowa is the Pittsburgh Steelers of Iowa."

beating a dead horse here but can cooper CC CK. I can't let it go until he inks the paper.

I'm good with guys that want to be here. Cooper saying that is pretty cool. Welcome aboard. Hope this kid is as good as he looks/sounds.

Throughout the recruiting process Cooper has been impressive with his thoughtfulness and his candor...this kid is very well spoken (at least in print, I haven't heard or seen an interview with him) and seems to have a great head on his shoulders to go with the talent...

I'm glad we landed him and as a Steelers fan, I love the comparison!:D

I've been waiting for some actual news about the Rhobo cases on the team...

Anyway, to carry the Ballard analogy further, are the Steelers the only game in Pittsburgh? In the NFL maybe. How about the Pitt Panthers? How about the Pittsburgh Pirates? I don't know, how far is Happy Valley to Pittsburgh?

IMO Cooper's trying to say Iowa's football team is like the Steelers. Maybe it's because of the unis. Maybe it's because of the run defense - I could also say the pass defense (but I won't). Maybe it's because of the run-first offense.

There are many comparisons, but I believe he was comparing them as "main attraction" and as a power running, physical in your face smash mouth approach. The unis don't hurt either.

I think you answered it for yourself. Iowa has ISU, just cause they are around doesn't mean they matter.

Well, in Pittsburgh, Pitt football is about like ISU is in Iowa. The Pirates are like the I-Cubs only the I-cubs probably out draw the Pirates. Really, the only area where his point breaks down a bit is with the Penguins, but not many people nationally follow hockey comparatively speaking.

This. Pittsburgh is almost all about the Steelers, and a little bit about the Pens.
