The Outback Bowl is Kirk Ferentz

During the last two Big Ten Conference preseason events in Chicago, coaches were allowed to comment annonymously about other coaches. More than one coach mentioned Ferentz's comfy deal at Iowa.

It is unquestionably one of the greatest situations a coach could ask for. I don't think there is anyone that would disagree. That said, I have heard nothing from other coaches, even rival ones, expressing the utmost respect for KF. Is it genuine? My guess would be yes, but that's if you believe what they say.

And every single one of them have likely contacted his agent.

The fact is, they said it.

So Kirk's salary matches the product he's put on the field over the past nine years? And pork chop?--don't drag me into your alt. lifestyle.

In today's coaching world at the level we are talking, the salary's are all but irrelevant as a barometer, as pertains to W/L. KF could make 1/2 half as much and still be just as liked/not liked as he is now.

Would you be happy with KF if he made $2mil a year? My guess is it would have no bearing on your level of satisfaction of the product on the field.

There are things that bother me in regards to aspects of how KF rolls. But I am also on record as ultimately still Pro-KF, as a whole. The pro's still outweigh the cons. (caveat, there have been moments during the course of the seasons that this sentiment is put on hold).

Punting game? this one, oddly, bothers me more that maybe any other currently.

Ferentz's salary is inequitable to his performance over the past 9 years. His performance as a coach was especially unacceptable this year with our talent-level and weak schedule. I think Kirk is a good guy--his on-the-field product just isn't cutting the mustard.

So you're doubling down on the Outback being a mediocre bowl. Are you going to throw out the 2015 season as if it never happened as well? I'd like a B1G championship sometime as well. This just in-they're not easy to win. We've won or shared five in forty years. Not easy, and not where this program usually ends up.
You mean 5 in 24 years....don't you? None in the last 14 years. Unless I'm mistaken.

I think at the end of the day it comes back to Gary Barta. And publicly stating that you're going to reward your coach for getting to seven wins presents a bad look. I think a lot of the Kirk complaints on these boards are ultimately complaints about Barta. Many of them well justified, in light of his recent handling of the Dolphin incident. In addition to the bad contracts, lawsuits, etc.
I've been beating this drum for 8 years. Most of the folks around here really are that slow on the uptake.

I've reached the point where I'm more interested in the opponent, and what they bring to the table, then I am in what Bowl we're playing. Actually looking forward to Miss. St. game, so regardless of playing in the Outback bowl again I'm looking forward to it. Besides it's one more game I get watch and possibly suffer through.
This is where I'm at. I like a good defensive game, so this match up could be a good one. Not to be mistaken for 2 inept offenses fumbling around making average defenses look like the 85' Bears. I don't want top watch that.

I believe the last was in 2004. Going back to the Hayden wra I counted 1981 (tie) 1985, 1990 (four way tie) and Kirk's 2002 and 04. I think that's it so yes, none in the last 14 years.

Agreed. I'd honestly rather see two strong defenses in an absolute slugfest then see two offenses run up 50 pts against each other in a first to make a stop wins game. I'm honestly looking forward to it.

Kind of hard to tell how good the Ds are due to the offensive handicaps.

BINGO!

They were very good. Between the two lineups, you could field a team of guys that will end up on NFL rosters. Miss St.'s interior D was godly, and Iowa has at least two DLs and 2-3 DBs that will end up on a roster over the next year or two.

It was an interesting contrast in styles on the defense as well. Miss State was uber aggressive with both playmaking and play calling. It ended up biting them a couple times, but also paid off more often than not. Whereas Iowa did what Iowa always does . . . bend don't break, win individual matchups at the line, maintain gap integrity, punish mistakes with TOs. The conservative approach won out today.
