The offensive line is beefing up!

Great stuff on the O line! I love it when you football junkies find stuff like this for those of us who are far too lazy to dig it up. Appreciate you.

I resemble that remark.

Say what you will about Kirk but our offensive lines don't usually suck under his leadership.

As posters mentioned being heavy is not everything. Some lineman had to lose weight to get into better shape for football.

Keagan Rander 305 -10 pounds
Ross Reynolds 300 -8 pounds

But can our RBs see the cutback lanes, plant their foot and get through them when they are there? That is the bigger question, IMHO...

Yes both Wadley and Canzari have shown that they see cutback lanes and have the ability to get through them. Iowa loses two very good backs, but I am confident that these guys can get the job done.

He's listed as TE? WTF! I had no idea and was wondering what happened to him. He was a pretty decent recruit out of Chicago coming out of high school. Wonder what the deal is. Maybe he just peaked in high school.

Really? I went with the Super Bowl teams.

Starting offensive line for the Seattle Seahawks:
Russell Okung 6'5" 310
James Carpenter 6'5" 321
Max Unger 6'5" 305
JR Sweezy 6'5" 298
Justin Britt 6'6" 320

Starting offensive line for the New England Patriots:
Nate Solder 6'8" 320
Dan Connolly 6'4" 305
Bryan Stork 6'4" 310
Ryan Wendell 6'2" 300
Sebastian Vollmer 6'8" 320

There's more to it than size. Good feet and knowing how to use your body for leverage is as important if not more important.

Shame we don't follow those two teams more closely. Both teams adapt to what their personal is, and what the other team is doing. I think our OL is decent, I just never understand why it takes an entire month for them to gel (specifically our offense as a whole). Other teams seem to do fine in September scoring points and moving the ball. For us it's a process, and the past few years a process that really hasn't improved over the season.

How long did the Patriots take to gel this season? Everyone was writing them off during the first month. Same with the Seahawks. It took a while for them to gel; granted, Seattle's issue was injuries.

It is good news that some solid weight has been gained but let's not overlook that in today's landscape a 300 lb lineman is considered undersized, especially at tackle.

Check out the height and weight metrics at the big boy programs and you will see what I mean. Look no further than the absolute maulers Wisky puts out or the 350 lb left guard Beliema starts. Our last Rose Bowl team in 1991 the starting tackles were 285 lbs and that was nearly 25 years ago. These guys have 15 lbs at most on them.

Iowa has always went for quicker smaller linemen.

I think these guys are about tapped out at how big they can be and still play ball aren't they? We aren't going to see the majority of guys up around 330-340 are we? I think 290ish is the floor now a days but those at that weight who can play with leverage and technique can still get the job done. As fast as those DEs and blitzing LBs are I'm just in awe of how guys like Scherff at 320 can move and block them. Doesn't seem physically possible but for some it is.

Didn't Ryan Ward's younger brother join the program as a walk on (At TE).

Could it be a typo in that regard?

The problem with that analogy is thats a 10 foot wall and all those ladders(recruits) are only 4 feet long.
A-ha. But sometimes you can take some of those ladders and with some creative ingenuity, you can take an occasional peek over the wall. It doesn't last long, just long enough for everyone to get a glimpse of what's on the other side, and make everyone want to see more.
