The no-early-entry 2020 offensive lineup

Yesterday I found my mind wandering to what the team would look like if Wirfs and AJ Jackson come back next year (it's a bye week, you have to think about something). And then I remembered that Hockenson would have only been a junior this year. And then I thought, "Holy Hell, what would next year's offense have looked like if everybody had exhausted their eligibility!"

QB: Petras (RS soph)
RB: Sargent (senior) and Goodson (soph), followed by IKM (sr) and Young (sr)
WR: Smith, ISM, Ragaini, Tracy, Martin, Hutson, and Lockett
TE: Hockenson (sr), Sean Beyer (sr)

OT: Wirfs and AJ (sr and RS sr); backed up by Mark Kallenberger (jr)
Interior OL: Banwart (sr), Linderbaum (RS so), Britt (so); maybe Kallenberger is in the mix here, possibly Ince and Shooter
That would be the most offensive talent we have ever fielded, right? That would have to be the most talented OL ever. And we could argue the best TE ever (some others may have been as good, but can you really argue anyone else was clearly better?). RBs and WRs may not be at elite levels, but that is a lot of talent and depth.

Not close...

'02
OL Gallery, Steinbach*, Nelson*
TE Clark*
RB Russell, Lewis
Wr Jones, Brown

most importantly...
QB Banks*, Chandler

* These were 1st-team all-americans that year

"those were the days"...

This OL could have 3 All-Americans (if you hop on board the Linderbaum hype train).

I would argue Hock is on par with Clark (1st team AA, Mackey winner).

I don't think I could judge the WRs, I don't remember enough about Jones/Brown. Who is better between '02 and '19, and by how much?

How do you rate the RB matchup?

I agree, the QB seems to tip things in favor of '02.

Hmm..

OL
Sobieski was a 5th round draftee in '02
Gallery wasn't AA in '02, but he was national lineman of the year in '03
So yeah, they were really good- I still give that to '02

TE
Yeah Tj / Clark is probably a push

WR's
'02 I think Hinkel, as a frosh, was #3- not as deep as the current group.
I'd say Brown / Jones were both ISM'ish, though
Push?

RB
Russell was all-Big10 1st team that year, 2nd team the next.
Probably the best feet / shiftiest RB of the KF era, if not all-time Iowa (T Banks?). Way better than any current.
But like WR, not as deep- Lewis very good but often hurt. How good will Goodson be?
Maybe slight edge '02

Edge to '02 non-QB, huge edge '02 w/ QB

Petras might consider “recruiting “ AJ and Tristan for his own self interests!

Not sure how great of a friend he can be to them to outweigh the millions of $$ they would be giving up.

With as many OL that are rotating in this year, we might be just fine next year at all 5 spots. The interior OL will be tough and experienced, so a lot will depend on Kallenberger and Plumb next year.

It would be nice to get Petras some snaps this next game where he gets a chance to actually move the team instead of playing out the clock.

Does Petras stay?

I’m wondering what his thought process is if he knows Hogan is chomping at the bit.
