The next big move in realignment?

This could be a cool possibility.. The Big Ten and conferences in general are completely compromised now anyway. The traditional bowl tie ins (Rose Bowl) doesn't really have any Big Ten affiliation now anyway, and with this proposed realignment, Iowa still pretty much plays in the Big Ten. The landscape is going to change anyway and this makes the most sense for the inevitable 16 team playoff. This way a team could earn its way into the playoff based solely on results (like NFL/MLB) instead of having 20 people in a room giving it the best guess

Not to mention the games on the schedule would consistently be a lot better. It would be way easier to make it to away games and we would play Power 5 conference games 10 games of the season. Sounds like a step up to me

ISU would sell their soul to get into the GIG. To their credit the BIG would never stoop so low. I'm not sure the MAC would accept them.

I think this is one man's dream, but it's still kind of fun to think about. I have heard these kinds of theory's before when there was talk of schools breaking away from the NCAA. It would be cool to have 64 teams and having power schools playing each other all the time. The ratings would be through the roof. It would not be so good for the little guy, but they can play during the week and still get some ratings.

With 64 (or 66) teams would this take on more of an NFL playoffs kinda look. If so, you have to think that the regular season would be cut back to 10 or 11 games. A top 8 playoff adds 3 games. Which wouldn't be that bad, just cuts out the cupcake games.

With divisions of 11 teams, that would give you a full round robin and possibly an extra game to play your chosen out-of-division rival.

The FCS division pretty much has this in place already.

would this make it just 6 home games every year at a max? I think losing out on some home games would be a deterrent for programs

Since this comes from Chip Brown, one might read the tea leaves and think Big Ole Texas is not happy with their current spot at the table. Time to create chaos and blow the Big12 up.

Despite the mega LHN network money has there been a bigger loser in realignment than Texas? They have lost a huge rival in A&M, opened the state of Texas up to the SEC with A&M's membership, lost Nebby & Missouri making the Big12 less attractive, added TCU helping them become a legit player on the big stage, helped Baylor ascend and added a trip to West Virginia of all places. They cannot get more than a football game or two on the LHN. Meanwhile they are not relevant at moment in either football or basketball.

Texas made their money but in the process made it better for all of their underlings diminishing their gains. I see a blow up coming and this is a sign.

You made some really excellent points here. If Texas is truly unhappy, they have the power to shake things up.

This article just reads of desperation for the Texas Longhorns and the Big 12 in general, and the tears taste delicious.

There's certainly intrigue in this idea for the fans, but I just don't see what would be in it for the Big Ten or its schools. They are going to cash in big time in their next tv deal coming up and BTN is basically printing millions of dollars for each school.

I would think the Big Ten is happy where they're at.

As I stated earlier, Texas via Chip Brown is sending out smoke signals. They are not happy and want something. This is a way for them to find out their options and attract suitors.

Keep in mind David Boren, president of Oklahoma has been making some noise recently through his statements as well. TX & OK are the only 2 properties of value in the Big12 so that is a telling sign that there are issues. The others are not saying squat because they have no legs to stand on.

Texas lost big in realignment except for money. The had their chief in-state rival under their thumb and allowed them to become an equal or better now that they have membership in a better football conference. That was a major mistake. The Big12 has been weakened and gained nothing from a status perspective with the last 2 additions. They are perceived as the 4th or 5th conference within the Power 5 in terms of prestige. Look no further than the playoff selections last year. When push came to shove for 4 spots they were left out. This year how fitting would it be if TCU gets into the playoff? Had they remained in the Mountain West they would never get a sniff. Now league members are benefiting on the back of Texas while they languish.

This will come to a head in the next year or two.
