Hawkeye Football. In trying to occupy my mind during this last week, I was contemplating the near future of the team with all the young players that will get significant time this year.

In 2014, our Starting lineup could be the most experienced team ever fielded by KF.

SE - Hillyer (will play this year)
LT - Scherff (if he's still here)
LG - Walsh
Center - Simmons
RG - Blythe
RT - Donnal
TE - Hamilton
WR - Fleming
QB - Ruduch
FB - Weisman
RB - Garmon/Hill/ or Canzeri

Defense
LE - Spears
LT - J. Johnson
RT - C. Davis
RE - Ekatite
LB - Alston
LB - Perry
LB - Meier
CB - Buford
CB - Lomax
SS - Law
FS - Lile

All these guys will be juniors or seniors with significant starts and experience. The LB's will be the only position that may be a little green since the three guys starting this year will be starting most likely in 2013...we will be breaking in a new LB crew, but they will be playing behind a monster DL.

As my signature states...I think this team contends not only for a Big Ten Title, but a NC as well. My issue would be that Scherff is likely gone after next year...but we have more depth coming in this class as well as I believe our recruiting is on a big upswing with Brian Ferentz and Lavar Woods.

I know people will say, can't we just play 2012 please...but I wanted to point out...We will need some great sunglasses in the next few years...because the future is nuclear in my opinion. Whatever happens this year, and I think it can be a good year, is only a step to ascend to the top of college football.

It's good to be a Hawkeye right now.

I love the optimism and enthusiasm, WOTC. :)

Seriously though...think about the actual depth that we will have in 2014. I didn't mention all the guys waiting in the wings. I don't really remember a time where the OL and DL are both going to be loaded like this with the experience of a few years of playing time.

I'm more excited about Iowa Football's future than at any time...the building blocks are all there. If Rudduck is as advertised, and he has another year to mature...we are going to be freaking good.

I totally agree. It's just that I've been around long enough that I hesitate before looking so far forward, given all the variables built in to a two-year time span of college football.

Yeah...I hear ya...I just think we have more depth than ever before, so NORMAL attrition or career ending injuries should make an impact. I just look at the OLine / DLine players and think we are going to be special.

If our attrition continues on it's normal path, half of the guys you listed won't even be here by then. I agree that the building blocks are there right now for a bright future though. I don't know about NC-bright, but you never know I guess.

Something to think about...projected weights in 2014

Offensive Line
LT - Scherff - 315
LG - Walsh - 300
C - Simmons - 310
RG - Blythe - 300
RT - Donnal - 310
TE - Hamilton - 255

Defensive Line
RE - Spears - 270 / McMinn 270
RT - C Davis - 315 / Trinca Passat 285
LT - J Johnson 315 / D Cooper - 290
RE - F Ekatite 285 / Kenney 265

If we can stay health and keep everyone eligible...I really like where this is going.

Fun to think about.

NC talk is ridiculous. Along with this team's usual misfortunes, the schedule gets a lot tougher again in '13 and '14.

Iowa has never had an OL full of 300 pounders, and they ain't gonna in 2014. A few of those guys would have to add 25-30 pounds, and the coaches won't have them do that.

Go back to the beet farm Mose. Scherff, Simmons, and Donnal are already there. Walsh and Blythe will both be 300 pounds...both have big frames. I don't think it's a stretch that in two years that add 20 pounds...especially Blythe. There is no way he only weighs 275 right now...He's bigger than his center that weighs 284.

This isn't a stretch if these are the 5 guys in two years.

A stretch yes...ridiculous no. With where we are this year, and the number of underclassmen that will be getting significant playing time, we should be better next year in the trenches and the only wild card will be a our redshirt Soph QB. If he is good, we get much better next year.

If Ruddock continues to develop to his junior year, with what we would have coming back, (obviously barring any rash of injuries/suspensions), we will be favored in all but maybe one or two games on the road. It's a stretch since it's two years down the road, but the building blocks and player eligibility makes sense. We will have experience, and taking into account the staff's track record in player development...where do you see holes to make this ridiculous?

It could happen.

WOTC, you left out KMM, Damon Bullock (who will be better than people think), and Darian Cooper. I agree with you, the 2014 team could (could!) be loaded.

sure it is nice to daydream a bit, but i don't get too worked up about it either way. more power to you man.

These guys are just not going to end up with playing weights that heavy, other than maybe Blythe. If you haven't noticed, this staff does not like OL that are too heavy. Keep dreaming.
