The Morning After NIU: I Found Some Silver Linings

Something tells me that will have many more posts like this throughout the year. Let's just call it Silver Linings The Morning After Report. :)

Breaking down the video? LOL, right coach!

You mean you drunkenly and angrily pushing rewind on your DVR. I'm sure that's a solid analysis right there Lombardi.

Think you need to re-read that post, champ. Pretty sure he's not talking about breaking down video himself.

There's a reason Lynch is a Heisman candidate and Rudock is not (at the point, at least *wink*). It's because HE IS A GOOD QB!!!

Riddle me this one, football gawd... Had the 3rd and 1 pass been completed for a TD (and it very nearly was), would you still be on here beaching bout the "bonehead" call? If you answer yes to that Q, then you are either a fibber, a bonehead, or entirely too entrenched in your KirFer hatred to be able to make rational thoughts.

Lynch is a good quarterback, no doubt. But it almost seems like Miller likes to toss this quote in frequently after early season losses:

"All is not lost because Iowa lost to a team with arguably the best quarterback it will face all season and one of the best offensive lines it will face all season."

I remember him saying the same thing about Foles from Arizona. Solid QB indeed. However, our freaking defense is SOOOOOO bad that every QB looks good against us. Juice Williams, Steele Jantz, Tate Forcier. The list of awful QBs who look all pro against Iowa is long.

Eda, I dont know what to make of this team./ The QB play is going to have to improve a lot if we are going bowling./ But I do agree about peopple secong guessing the 3rd down call./ They are the same ones that well say we dont play to win if we run it and dont make it./ The nice thing about message boards is everyone gets to be a expert

BOWLING??? BOWLING? We just lost to a Mac team on our home field and you're talking about BOWLING? We have lost 7 straight games! BOWLING....BOWLING??

I had Iowa at 3-1 in the non-con but I assumed we would beat NIU and lose to ISU. If ISU sucks as bad as it sounded they did against UNI I think we have a chance in Ames.

ISU looked like a steaming pile of dog crap last night. It's going to be painful when they beat us.

There are thousands of people on this board. Of course there are some people who will complain when we throw a bomb on 3rd and 1 and some othere people who will complain when we run on 3rd and 1. I have always hated throwing deep on 3rd and 1. When it works I'm happy about it but I still think it was a dumb call.

There is also a difference between running on 3rd and 1 against a team like msu who stuffs us a big percentage of the time and a team like yesterday where we rarely didn't gain at least 1 yard. There is a middle ground and I think we all know Greg Davis is capable of drawing up a 1 yard pass play.

I'm really hoping they can use this week to somehow get Powell up to speed on how to catch a bubble screen.

I didn't see you mention where NIU was without their starting RB the entire game and their ball-busting best WR the entire 2nd half.

And they still overcame the ToP in the 2nd half and, of course, outscored us.

Lol. True. Doesn't mean he won't be the best ;)

Big picture - I think the program should be further along than this (i.e. losing to a MAC team, even a good MAC team). Within that context, this loss SUCKED.

Small picture - the reality is, the program took a step back last year & now we must incrementally crawl our way back (which, given the nightmarish nature of our schedule this year, might be shooting for 4 wins again). Within THAT context, I saw lots of reason for optimism yesterday. Secondary was picked on quite a bit and we need more production from the pass rush (2 issues tightly intertwined), but I saw a lot of the physicality/aggressiveness I like to see from Iowa defenses. Offensively, I thought we looked MUCH sharper than last year and have some potential playmakers as our new QB (who also impressed me) gets his feet under him.

Good point!! Now I'm even more ******!!!

Do you believe that Lynch is a better QB than Michigan's Devin Gardner and Ohio State's Braxton Miller?

time will tell. he was pretty good yesterday. he was nailed time and again by multiple iowa players/but didn't miss a beat. played a very hurried hurry up offense in extreme heat conditions. hit the open receivers. made plays, kept plays alive. was good enough last year to get to the orange bowl. now is he rothlisburger (sp) MAC good? not sure. but he put the ball on the numbers 61% of the time for 275 yards - 3TDS/0INTs. Pretty good stuff.

One thing i forgot to add, however...Iowa has a legion of stud TE's...yet 90% of the passing plays seemed to be horizontalish

I've yet to see any proof of how great Iowa TEs are. CJF is overrated, and the other guys might be great, but we have no reason to assume so.

#31 was pretty impressive for iowa. other than that .... maybe the OL (if given a chance - I think they win the game by helping to convert the 3rd n short into 1st downs).

yes...and I don't think it's even close. You have to remember that his guys had at least three drops yesterday too. He was money if you gave him time. That was the first game out for Lynch. I have yet to see how Miller can do when you take their running game away and he has to rely on scrambles and passing to be you. He didn't look too good against MSU last year. Gardner doesn't have the book of games yet. I think Lynch is easily top 5 in the country...and he projects well in the pros.
