The losses at Linebacker from last year

Certainly has eclipsed our worries about the o-line as this season as unfolded. Clayborn said something is missing from the defense. That is the missing link.

Our linebackers really are not making plays. I'm not sure why.

We win today by 21 points with Angerer and Edds.

Tarpinian would make a difference - we need him in there.

The corner play hasn't been as good either, but Angerer and Edds are huge. Not only for their play, but their leadership. I don't necessarily think we have poor leadership now, but it's not on the same level of Angerer/Edds or King/Kroul.

oh heck yes! that's the single biggest reason I was telling people the nat.champ. talk was bogus before this season. we barely beat UNI, can't dominate Arkansas St., get scared by Indiana, lose to Northwestern, scrape by UM, win in last second over MSU, then lose all that talent on both sides of the ball--including Angerer and Edds and somehow were supposed to be a lot better? Kudos to HaydenHawk56 for bringing this up, it was glossed over or ignored by too many people.

With the d-line we have, even Humpal and Klink would have massive games. We just don't have as much depth to reload like the stacked programs. That 2010 season that Edds put together came with a lot of hard lessons in 2007 and 2008. Hopefully, JVB and AJ Derby are sick and we're witnessing a rebuilding effort on defense. At least we won't be turning the whole line over to a bunch of underclassmen like we did in 2005.

hard to replace 3 guys who are high-level draft picks to the NFL.

on top of the talent loss, Angerer was a vocal leader of the D. Who is that person this year?

That's kind of what I was getting at. We've got some guys who lead by example (AC, Klug, Hunter, etc.), but no real vocal guys like Angerer or King.

I agree, I think the defense this year lacks a little explosiveness!
Watching a few videos makes me feel better today!

Even though its the same scheme wise, have to wonder about with Norm not being involved on a daily basis if thats having an effect on the D, just alot of coverage issues between the linebackers and secondary as well, Prater and Hyde seem to keep getting beat on deep throws, as well as i know the coverage we run has them playing off but seems they give up way too much cushion.

That's all I keep thinking when all those passes are being completed in the middle of the field with ease. Definitely miss the playmakers from the last few years. Apparently I took for granted how well those LB's played in pass coverage.

After rewatching the game my initial thoughts were confirmed. Iowa's middle linebacker
was missing in action all game long. Ferentz said after the game that Troy Johnson was
"dinged up" and therefore replaced by James Morris. I think the coach was protecting
Johnson from criticism and needed somebody with a heartbeat to help stop Wisconsin
on their final drive. Clayborn says there is something missing on the Iowa defense. I say
it's Jeff Tarpinian, the fastest most athletic MLB on the team. Sash, Clayborn, Ballard,
Klug, Greenwood, and others played their rear ends off. They were almost able to over
come all the special team mistakes. We'll never know for sure if Tarp would have made
the difference in this game. But I believe he would have had more than 4 assisted
tackles on his stat sheet. Iowa needs him next week to beat Sparty! Go Hawks!
