The Iowa Rotation

Well, time to stir up some fun here by being honest.

The Iowa 10-man rotation is a great thing to have. A lot has been made of why Fran plays "so many guys" and how a couple should be cut out and probably will next year.

If not for the Iowa bench, Iowa wouldn't be where they are today. There have been times when I would like to see the time on the floor for the bench shortened, but hey what Fran is doing is simply working, we may not always agree with it but not all fans will ever be happy.

Virginia is a team that probably has more talent than Iowa, on paper, in players 1 - 7. Here is what playing 10 guys does for Iowa. Nobody gets tired and everyone plays hard every possession, now we all know that is not entirely true, but you get my point.

Playing that many guys allows each player out there to go all out all the time and if someone isn't Fran usually will sit them for a time, sometimes too long? Well, that is for Fran to judge.

When all is said and done, the 10 man rotation has been nothing but a good thing for Iowa this season and I hope to see it continue as Iowa moves forward. The good thing is Iowa will loose May only and bring in Jok/Uthoff, so talent wise, Iowa is better. Iowa hasn't had a bench for a long time, since probably 2006 and it wasn't that good before then at times either. Playing that many guys keeps everyone engaged and ready, I look forward to seeing what Iowa can do with more firepower off the bench next season and watching Iowa impose its will on teams as it has done at times this year. The Virginia game in the second half never seemed close to me and it was, in large part, due to Iowa wearing them down and playing hard on every possession.

The depth is great and I expect to see 10-guys with regularity next season as well.

I don't think many are complaining about the overall #'s involved in the rotation. I know I'm not. It's great to have depth in case of injuries, bad shooting nights, foul trouble, match ups etc.... However, I believe most people complained about the timing of some of the rotations and the whole line change (think hockey). While it may have cost Iowa something this year (don't know what or how to calculate that), I think it will be good in the long-term. Losing only May and adding Uthoff, Jok, and Meyer plus Ingram being a year older will only complicate things more next year, but I think we'll see fringe players having shorter leases than this year and get less minutes if they are struggling. Good times ahead though.

Depth in the rotation was routine during the Mr. Davis days.

This only a good problem to have. There will probably one or two redshirts next year and some guys who have been getting 15 minutes might only get 8, 4 in each half. I could see Jok getting half of Oglesby's minutes and if RDM is running the point then clemmons might not gain many minutes.

I would think Uthoff/white/basabe will rotate around the 3 and 4 to lessen Mccabes minutes. But it is a great thing when the guys you are winning with are getting beat out for minutes because your talent level is going up.

If Fran thinks he has a solid 8 players he can go to every game he will do it by rotating them.

For example, rotate RDM/gesell/clemmons at the 1 and 2 then rotate White/uthoff/basabe at teh 3 and 4 and alternate Woody and Olesani at the 5. that is 8 players with maybe just a few minutes for some others like Jok, JO, and Mccabe
