The "icing on the cake" "gravy" approach.

Everywhere I look, on these forums and amongst Hawk fans in my community, people are taking this "icing on the cake" approach to the game Saturday.

"Well, even if we lose, I don't care because everything from here on out is icing on the cake."

"Everything from here on out is just gravy."

"I had no expectations coming into this season so a loss really won't bother me."

I can think of no reasonable explanation for taking this approach to Saturday's game other than for purposes of mitigating the anxiety and stress leading up to this game. I can neither read something like this online nor hear it in person without thinking that the person is lying through their teeth.

Come on people, this is is a complete Cyclown mentality. While it certainly is crazy to think that Iowa is in the hunt for a national championship, and a spot in the playoff final four would transcend any expectations coming into this season, Iowa should be at least competing for a Big Ten Championship every year. Maybe not necessarily in the championship every year, but they certainly should be competing for the B1G Championship each year given the relatively winnable division.

I, for one, will be devastated if we lose to MSU.

I will be heart broken. It will take nothing away from this incredible season. But I will always remember it as the year that Iowa LOST the B1G Title game and LOST a chance to make the Playoffs first and foremost. Then I will remember it as the 12-0 season.

I see this attitude to Iowa being in relatively unfamiliar territory, almost in a state of shock in comparison to the blue-bloods who seemingly have a lock on the top slots in D1 football. Our record alone is something not seen before. Many of us have wanted to be in contention for the division ever since conference expansion. And even last year up until blowing the Nebby and Wisky games they were still in the hunt. It's just that it took a 12-0 record to paraphrase Bum Phillips to kick the door in.

There would be nothing better for me than for Iowa to once again show the world this team is legitimately good and put a pounding on MSU and advance to the playoffs.

Cake is good and all, but it is the extra icing that makes a good cake, a great cake!

Just because I personally say and have repeated that it's "icing on the cake" doesn't mean I'm not geared up for Saturday like it's a Super Bowl or Stanley Cup game. This is still THE game...but like the NFL or NHL, getting to the postseason is a relief, especially when you weren't expecting to get there from the getgo, and you have fought long and hard to achieve that success...you reach one plateau, take a few deep breaths, and then go hard after your final goals...in our case, 3 games to go!

The thing is, in any sport, making it to the final four (or conf championship) is not an everyday occurance for any team, but to do so after a very successful regular season...it IS extra games, extra socializing, extra preperation, extra analysis, extra tailgating...it IS the "extra" gravy or icing.

Dantonio told his team the same thing.
Relax and have fun .

IA did the same thing every game.

Play hard and smart.. Thx Hawks for great season and MUCH FUN !!

Hope it continues for next two or three games!!

Cake is good. Cake with icing is even better. Gravy? No, I don't gravy on my cake. That sounds pretty awful.

This is a big game on a big stage. We have a chance to run, undefeated, into the championship playoff. MSU is a damn good team - and they've been in big games this season (Michigan, OSU). We have a lot to prove.

Do I want the Hawks to win? Absolutely. I want to destroy MSU. It would be awesome to be complaining about how boring the game is because we are up by 50 at half-time.

Am I going to give up on the Hawks if they lose? Of course not. Iowa has accomplished a hell of a lot this year. It will be a great season whether they win or lose this game. They will be going to a great bowl whether they win or not. But i will be damn disappointed if they lose.

I expect a close game that could be a toss-up in either direction. We are going to find out if the Hawks are ready for the "big time". I sure hope they are. I want to kick MSU's *** and shut the doubters down.

Go Hawks!

laughed as I visualized putting some gravy on the cake.

yeah, I have to agree that sounds pretty awful.

We may never be in this situation again. A loss doesn't take away from a successful season but i ain't approaching this game with that mentality. I want this really, really bad.
