The Ice Cold Hawks, Freeman Out with 2 fouls Game Thread

Sandfort about shot us out of the first half, but we don’t stand a chance without him in the 2nd. I’m just looking for some consistency. They played terrible to be honest and still had a chance. Gotta feel good about our bench play. Is there any kind of news on Cooper Koch?

Irrespective of all the warts this team has, they showed some damn fight today. Almost every stat was against us and we had a shot at the end to win on the road against a good team. Our sophomores are studs.

They learn from this. Iowa is a good team, excited to watch this season.
First time in a few seasons I agree with ur optimism, Good. Had a feeling they could be sneaky good this year.
We all know the rebounding / size limitations but as deep and athletic as any in Fran era and better on D. Of course, not much more to say bout the feast / famine shooting. Just gimme high 30s from 3 and high 40s overall + just fricking high 70s ft and they're in every game and easily dancing!

Something the announcers didn't bother noticing, but pretty amazing: from the 11 min mark until the 3 min mark of the 2nd half, I think every Michigan basket was a layup or 2-ft putback. (Not counting FTs.) I'll have to watch the tape, but it was simply incredible -- Iowa couldn't keep a single opponent in front of them, and whether it was a guard or a 7'er, they simply got layup after layup after layup after layup. For the final shot, all Iowa needed to do was keep 5 guys in front of them for 16 seconds and that game very likely goes to OT. Nope...couldn't do it. Another layup.
I'd like to see Mulvey getting more minutes...he gives the Hawks some bulk on the inside, is a good rebounder, doesn't make turnovers, and CAN MAKE SOME FTs. Not the most athletic guy, but he seems to be in the right place more often than not and has earned more minutes.
I couldn't figure out why Harding kept driving into the lane vs Michigan's two 7'ers in the 1st half. It's like he never read the scouting report.

Amazing comeback. Down to the wire. Mich is a terrible matchup for us. Peyton broke out late. His injury must really be a problem. Thanks, little bro! Thanks, Riley M. Our new frosh helped us briefly. At, times, we looked really physical on D, even under the basket. Dembele played some tough D. Iowa is going to surprise a lot of people. Damn. They are really fun to watch.

Yeah they killed us on layups

Time and Again in the second half

Riley likes to bang around and should be getting more floor time

Our D can be very good, but we do need to make a few adjustments to protect the lanes

Defense can always be better but I have been seeing a lot of positives on the defensive end so far this season. It’s not all the way to where I’d like to see it, but I have to say this team has figured out some D and that’s going to help this season. I really think this team will surprise. Hawks need to start having some consistency from 3 or else start looking for the next best option.

Yeah, defense didn't lose Iowa that game. Getting down 20-4 and Sandfort going 0-9 probably did though. This is not the typical Iowa is bad at defense team. Look at the #'s, that bears it out. We aren't at the bottom of the conference in any Defensive efficiency metrics and Iowa is ALWAYS there. We've had wildly bad shooting from our star elite shooter in both of our losses. If Payton Sandfort is going to shoot us out of games, it doesn't matter how good of defense we play. Free throws in both losses, terrible. Rebounding, also terrible, but probably going to be consistently bad there because we just don't have the size or depth we normally do in the post.

Iowa could have stole that game ... now we need to make sure we protect HC - we can only afford to lose 1 or 2 at home all season, if that.

Sandfort shot a dismal 30% in this game and was responsible for 31% of the total misses for the game and there were 11 guys who took shots. Miss all 9 in the first half and make 1/2 of your shots in the second half doesn't get it, it equals a loss when you take 20 shots. I hope he can get it together soon for the team's sake. More shots taken by some of our other players would make a win out of a loss.
