Looking at the entire game it was much like a boxing match where the experienced boxer waited out the fierce punches of his opponent until the opponent is spent. Iowa State wailed away that first half and Iowa taking its best punches and only down seven at the half. The punches that were landing suddenly didn't land in the second half. Iowa State was spent. Iowa began to punch and jab at an Iowa State team that avoided getting in a corner until the fourth quarter. Iowa then landed the knock out punches to an exhausted Iowa State team.
There are comments both ways about talent levels of the respective schools. In the end Iowa had the talent that was able to play four quarters, Iowa State not so much. Iowa was able to bring players off the bench and Iowa State couldn't. Iowa State had to rely on six junior college transfers during this game, with more of them on their bench. If you think about it, that means there is a lack of depth which equates to less talent. Prematurely looking at the recruiting for 2016 Iowa is well ahead of ISU. Iowa needs to put together a good season to keep the recruits in the fold.
Along those lines it is obvious Iowa State is experiencing a lot of attrition. Players and coaches are leaving at an above average clip. It cannot be a "happy" group based on the attrition that is occurring. Iowa State admissions is doing what it can to get players into the school, but turnover is never a good thing.
Enough about Iowa State. Never has it been more obvious that quarterback play is critical. In his third start and first time to start on the road, CJ Beathard made critical throws that could not have been made last year. It becomes obvious that he was tight the first half. As the game wore on he relaxed and made the plays. His running really expanded the area of the field to defend. Just the threat of running forced Iowa State re-position its defense. Iowa will go as far as CJ will take them.
That is all folks.
