It's the future of college basketball; the 3 point shot.
How do we rank, nationally, and in the B1G? Who's shootin' the 3, who's makin' the 3?
Note: Rankings are updated nightly and teams can move up or down 5-10 spots immediately because rankings are figured to the nearest thousandth of a percentage point.

1. 14. Wisc. 90-224 40.2%**
2. 23. Mich. St. 96-243 39.5%
3. 36. Ill. [surprize!] 104-269 38.7%
4. 81 Ohio St. 80-217 36.5%
5. 83. Mich. 89-242 36.8%
6, 85 Ind. 79-215 36.7%
7. 90 Pur. 120**-328** 36.6%

8. 109 Neb. 95-263 36.1%

11. 202 Iowa 83-246 33.7%
12. 206 Rut. 77-229 33.6%
T13. 242 Minn.62-190 32.6%
T13. 242 Penn. St. 84-258 32.6%

We could expect Iowa's percentage to rise as/if JBo and Baer's does

Top 10 nationally:

1. Ind. St. [ISU] 44.5%
2. Leheigh 43.7%
3. Vir. Tech. 43.5%
4. S.D.St. 43.0%
5. Creighton 42.6%
6. Oakland [Mi.] 41.9%
7. Dartmouth 41.8%
8. Abiline Christian 41.4%
9. N.C.St. 41.1%
10. N. Colo. 40.7%

3 Pt. FG MADE:

1. The Citadel 155
2. Savannah St. 153
3. Dartmouth 150
4. Wofford 140
5. Purdue-Ft. Wayne 135

3 Pt. FG ATT [who's really launching 3's!!]

1. Savannah St. 540!!! [compare to Iowa's 246!]
2. The Citadel 406 [over 100 less than the leader, tho they may be a gm behind Sa. St.]
3. Youngstown St. 385
4. Purdue-Ft. Wayne 384
5. Elon 361

You can see how the "3" is the great equalizer, as all 5 of the top 5 are nonpower 5 conf. teams

3 Pt. FG att. per game, nation [hold on to your hat!]

1. Winthrop 34 per game!
T2. E. Wash. 31
T2. Bryant 31 [know what to expect next game?]
4. Elon 30
5. Army 30
6. Purdue 30

Yeah with Cook and Garza we aren't going to be too high up the 3 pt rankings... Not to mention JBo struggling still.. I sure wish he'd snap out of whatever it is he's got going on. He hasn't been himself this year at all.

I’ll preface this post by saying basketball stats can be very misleading.

Here’s the thing. Iowa ranks 284th in the country in shots attempted per game. That is because we are 1st in the country in free throw rate. Basically a lot of our possessions are ending in free throw attempts, which limits the number of chances to shoot threes. Certainly not a bad thing.

Another thing is those stats can be easily swayed by playing crappy non conference opponents. Wisconsin for instance hit 16 3s against Savannah State. Iowa really doesn’t need to chuck up a bunch of threes against these teams when they have Cook and Garza dominating inside. We could have easily pushed tempo and shot a bunch of threes last game, but it looked like were were content to work on our half court sets.

I predicted before the season that this could be Fran’s best 3pt shooting team. I still believe that can be true. JBo has been off and for some reason seems a little hesitant to pull the trigger. My guess is he will get it going from outside.

IMO 3pt shooting won us the Oregon, Pitt, and Iowa State games this year. We averaged over 10 made threes in those games on nearly 40%. Very good. We just haven’t shot well or haven’t needed to in many of the other games.

Prediction: Iowa will rank in the top 5 in the B1G in % and threes made in conference play by season’s end.

Who would have thunk that a team coached by Pitino's son would be ranked that low in league in both attempts and accuracy.

Why does it always seem like they hit over 50% of them against us?

Here's a bold prediction for you that will have the purists running for cover. The NBA, within ten years, will have a four point line.

Yes, and after a 5 point line just to keep their low ratings from totally evaporating. I don't watch the NBA now, never have, never will.

Interesting. Teh trey used to be the bread and butter of Mark Few’s Gonzaga teams but I don’t see the Zags near the top of this list.

They have been recruiting and cashing in on alot of overseas, tall talent, and don't need the 3 so far this year.

So they're going to award FOUR FT's on a 4-point attempt foul? ;)

JBo seemed to have his shooting touch trending in the right direction yesterday. Really the only others struggling from deep are Dailey and Connor. I guess Kriener as well if you want to throw him in with the bunch.

Am I missing something here? Savannah St. has 540 attempts in 13 games so they average over 40 attempts per game.
