The good and the bad

We finally started playing real defense when we were down 14... instead of the soft, timid D we have been playing for 2 weeks.

The bad:

The senior class... just not a clutch group and they never were.

Sapp and Woodbury 1/4 at the line when it matters.

They just don't have it at the end of the games and never have.

Remember when Iowa was top 10 in defensive efficiency? I don't even remember how that was possible. Were other teams just missing all these wide open shots? Fran's Defense is either:

Man to Man: Teams get wide open dunks and offensive rebounds
Zone: Teams get wide open 3's and offensive rebounds

Its truly baffling

Good point. and the answers are NO and YES, SINCE 1ST PENN STATE GAME IN IOWA CITY.

if you go back and watch.. we finally started playing desperate defense down 14.

If we could somehow find that... it could help.

We now have four seasons to evaluate this senior class. On the positive side it was able to bring Iowa back to a degree of respectability, but as was pointed out it didn't have the component to finish out games. In all the losses this year Iowa had a chance to pull out a win in the waning minutes. You can ask why, but it comes down to having a player on the floor to manage the end of the game and neither Clemons nor Geselle has that ability. Tonight Iowa was rushing its offense in the waning minutes of the game and it is why the shots were not the best available.

On the plus side we saw better bench play. They really got Iowa back in the game when the seniors were struggling.

On senior night, 3 freshman were the reason they were even in the game

Kind of. They did some good things offensively, but also dug us into a 10 point deficit in the first half because they didn't rebound and missed a bunch of layups after offensive rebounds. But Baer and Wagner did a nice job during the comeback thanks to Gesell setting them up. Gesell's foul trouble is what killed us tonight. We were like plus ten when he was on the court. Don't know what happened to lockdown Clemmons. He used to be good for at least limiting their best player while everyone else held their own with the other four. When we were up one with the ball, and Uthoff missed another jumper off a great screen, you knew he wouldn't shoot again (and he didn't, passed up a drive and a 3 pointer from the top after).

There is zero respectability for this team. We are quite literally the laughing stock of college basketball right now. That's what this team did this year.

True. But after playing desperate defense that means games are going to be close the last four minutes,

sphincters tighten up,

which screws up shooting forms all over the floor even worse than the first 36 minutes -- and especially the FT line.

I think this is fair and accurate.

I kinda want us to try not hedging on every screen next game. I kinda got tired of watching a great three point shooting team get wide open threes because we hedged on everything. The next game isn't that meaningful so it'd be fun to try something and maybe see what can be done to get the team playing a little looser.

You really think anyone outside Iowa and ISU fans cares about what Iowa's doing? Do you care that Maryland has collapsed like us, probably not. Who knows, maybe they think they are the laughingstock that the whole world is watching too? They'd be wrong as well. If they weren't in first in the B10 a few weeks ago, I'd have no idea they were slumping either. No one cared about Iowa three weeks ago except our fans and Cyclone fans (who were jealous at that point). It wasn't like football, where we were hated because folks thought we were overrated, playing the weakest schedule in the league, and undeserving, and all over sports talk radio. Pretty sure the basketball team hasn't made any sports talk shows during the losses outside of Iowa and the BTN.

When I was younger I use to be concerned about what people thought about me, but then I realized they didn't really spend much time thinking about me.

Just what the Dr ordered for 3-point shooting defense ... Michigan!

Since there are only 3 games left this season and none of them matter, I'd like us to start Uthoff, Jok, Williams, Baer and Wagner. Uhl and Gesell are first off the bench for Wagner and Williams. Flemming is next for Jok. Uthoff plays 38 minutes and takes it to the rack every possession; he needs to focus on auditioning for the NBA and regain some cred that he can play at that level without getting b1tch slapped. Clemmons and Woody play 10 minutes or less and the newbies need to get meaningful experience for next season.
