And who's to say Rudock would have been even that good, given the supporting cast? Beathard gives us our best chance to compete this year. That doesn't necessarily mean we have a good chance to compete.

I agree. Everyone knows more than the coaches. Goldie is sooo much better than jakey. Goldie will make all our problems go away....

it it will take a lot more than Goldie. Our problems are much deeper.

There will be plenty of blame to go around this year - on the field and on this forum. Get ready. Nobody will be left without egg on their face..

er I mean pie.

As long as that wasn't a "Shemp" episode, I say we try 'em. Larry couldn't be a worse OC than the current. Mo would smack KF upside the head for lack of emotion. Curly pretty much rules the day running a flying wedge.

Shemp would suck. Totally.

Why do so many people confuse "CJ is better than Jake" with "we will be really good if CJ played instead of Jake"?

That said, I don't know how the practice was in relation to a full game, but if it was anywhere close to the same and we really only scored 3 points, we are in serious trouble.

Here's the problem. Our offense has looked like crap in the spring, and fall for many years now. We keep getting told that's because the defense is so far ahead of where the offense is at.

Yet, last year's defense was pretty poor. I can't imagine they are THAT much better.

Iowa under KF has an offense problem. Minus 2001/2002/2005/2008, we have been miserable to watch. 2010 team seemed to be a little bit better until we lost our RB's and OL (in a blow out against MSU)

Those of us expecting large changes with CJB at QB are just fooling themselves. I think we'll be better at throwing over the top, but the offense will be asked to stall once we get a two score lead.

Eh I wouldn't ever recommend putting too much stock into what you hear out of a spring game let alone a spring practice like this one. I was there. They did some redzone drills where the offense tried to score from the 10 yard line for awhile. It mostly consisted of runs. The defense won the battle overall, but the offense managed to get over the goal line a few times. CJ did have one overthrow during this drill.

After the redzone drills they backed the offense up a bit and did more of a scrimmage. CJ threw some very nice balls. The tackles were consistently getting beat by Ott and Meier. CJ didn't have a whole lot of time in the pocket. The plays broke down and there would have likely been a couple sacks, but he also would have scrambled for a couple first downs if it were live. That's a big difference between Jake and CJ. Jake often times would dump it off, throw it away, or take the sack. It's also worth noting that it was a pretty windy day. Nothing outrageous or anything, but the wind was definitely having an impact on the deep balls. Having said that, there is absolutely no doubt that CJ has a much stronger arm than Jake. His ball has a noticeable zip on it. He completed a 20 or 30 yard pass on a flag pattern to a TE on the sideline right in front of me that Jake wouldn't have had a chance at completing. If Jake tried to throw it then it would have been picked. CJ launched it and went right over the defenders hands and the TE made a nice diving catch before sliding out of bounds (not sure who the TE was but I think it was but I think it was Duzey or Pekar). It's also worth noting that CJ completed a couple bombs during the 7 on 7 portion that had the crowd ooing and awing.

I will add that Weigers struggled. He has a nice arm, but he made some poor choices with the ball. Tried to force some passes across the middle that he shouldn't have. Struggled to handle the center/QB exchange a couple times and he kept getting tripped while trying to get away from the center. It was hard to tell if it was on him or the guards though. It looked like he was getting stepped on. Overall, I came away pretty concerned about depth at the QB position. If CJ goes down it's trouble. Ryan Boyle was on the sideline and he looks the part. If CJ gets hurt I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see a freshman come in and get a shot at being #2 (depending on how early in the season it would be).

Good info. Thanks

Thanks for sharing that insight.

Is his nickname "Golden Boy" or "Sunshine" now?

Well, maybe they should have canceled the '09 season after the UNI game because we didn't look good in that game. Who cares about small sample sizes anyway?

Couple other guys I noticed...

Matt Nelson. Dude is big. He was getting a lot of reps with the 1's on defense. He and Meier were rotating. I should have added him in my previous post when I said Ott and Meier were pressuring the QB. Nelson was as well. He definitely would have had at least one sack.

At RB: Canzeri didn't get a lot of reps which is probably smart. Daniels looked solid. He really moved the pile on an off tackle run to the left. Made it untouched about 7 yards and then pushed the pile forward for another 3 or 4. I thought Wadley and Mitchell had very similar running styles, and that's a good thing. They were quick and shifty. Wadley did cough the ball up once. Because of that I would give the nod to Mitchell, but obviously I saw a small sample size.

WR: Smith and Hillyer made some nice catches. Wisniewski (sp?) really looked the part at TE. I think that position should be utilized as much as possible this year. I think there's a reason Vandeberg is on the field. Sounds like he's been making circus catches in practice and I did notice he was able to create some separation at times, but he did have a perfect long ball from CJ go straight through his hands.

Another couple side notes... My brother and I were watching the defensive line drills and Meier got into it with someone. I wasn't sure who. Should have checked the roster sheet. He had a few choice words for him haha. Also, towards the end of practice Brian Ferentz lost it on someone up front. We weren't 100% sure but it appeared he was yelling at his younger brother Steven who was getting reps at center at the time.

Why do so many people confuse "CJ is better than Jake" with "we will be really good if CJ played instead of Jake"?

Probably because most of these zealots are clueless compound dwellers who live under the - false - pretense that they are people of intelligence.
