The Death of (Pseudo)Journalism, or, why I finally broke up with ESPN

What major broadcasting company is affiliated with ESPN? That's right, ABC. What major broadcasting company is affiliated with SEC games? That's right, CBS. So how is it you claim the above?

And what's with jumping down Erik's throat? Oh, he gave his objective opinion.

ESPN has a fifteen year deal to televise SEC sports, I realize CBS has a contract with them as well but that is how I claim the above.

An objective opinion doesn't require crazy assertations like that I want 40 minutes of Hawkeye highlights during Sportscenter when I made my complaint pretty clear. Also, I don't think I jumped down anyone's throat. I was probably just as reactionary as the posters were to me, probably should have just let it go, but .....

But how many times were the Hawks on ABC nationally or ESPN/ESPN2? So I don't think they're slanting their coverage against the Big 10 for monetary concerns for the SEC.

He is absolutely right.

No he isn't. There are a lot of adjectives you could pick for this Iowa football team but boring is not one of them. This was the most thrilling Hawkeye football season of the modern era and the Orange Bowl game was a fitting end to that.

I actually prefer ESPN's football broadcasts to any other network.

1) There are less commercials.

2) They show replays, during the Florida-Cincinnati game that guy jumped over the line to block and extra point and they would not show a replay.

3) Their play by play guys are generally better informed.

The way sports are structured in this day in age is to crown a champion. Thus, the most attention will be paid to the people competing for that championship. Also, college football is probably the second most popular sport in the country therefore its premier game will get a lot of coverage, just like the Super Bowl gets lots of coverage.

Unfortunately, although the Orange Bowl will be a great memory for all of us, it didn't crown a champion thus no one else really cares. I didn't really care when Cincinnati played Virginia Tech (in fact I thought it was Cincy vs Wake Forest for some reason) last year.

Yeah there are times when the nation cares, like when Boise beat Oklahoma and when Utah beat Alabama but that's because people love the underdog and the Boise/Oklahoma game may have been the best game ever played.

I just enjoy the fact that my school won a BCS game. There aren't many fans of teams who get to say that.

Riiiiggghhhtttt. That's why ESPN has about 2-3 Big 10 games on EVERY weel during the season (more than the Big 10 network) plus 1 almost every week on ABC.

That's why ESPN has a dedicated blogger, solely for the Big 10 (and one for every conference).

I can understand hating ESPN's national talking heads (Forde, Rome, etc) but to say that ESPN hates the Big 10 is ridiculous.

You want to know why the Orange Bowl didn't get much coverage? It's because it's two days before the national title game. Do you also get upset when ESPN shows more coverage to the NCAA tourney than the NIT? I don't know where some Iowa fans got this complex where everyone is out to get them, but it's becoming extremely annoying.

You know what else is annoying - people that read whole threads on subjects they're obviously not interested in only to react condescendingly with "Relax, we won" "why can't some people enjoy a win" etc... etc...

Did I ever complain about the team or say I'm miserable? On the contrary, I was ecstatic after Tuesday night and wanted a little coverage of the game. Maybe most of you living back home get sick of all the local coverage, but if ESPN or BTN doesn't cover it we who live in other states feel the lack of coverage. I don't think that makes me a conspiracy theorist that thinks "everyone is out to get them". Regardless, if my post is annoying ignore it. This is a sports message board. Get over yourself.

The season, and the endings to several games, may have been exciting.

That doesn't mean, to the average college football fan, that Iowa is an exciting football team to watch.

Pretty much. People like lots of points and they like it even more if it comes from an offense that is non-traditional (aka non-pro style offense like Iowa runs). Why do you think so many people like Georgia Tech's offense and think they are "exciting"?

The only reason why I personally care about what they talk about on ESPN is because I want to here about my favorite team as much as I can but that's selfish of me.

Some of you just need to realize a simple fact; most of America besides Iowa and a SMALL part of Georgia really couldn't have given a crap about our game, and that is what ESPN caters to. They want viewers, and the ratings of our game show it, not many people watched.

Erik said it was "a relatively boring game between relatively boring teams" and some of you took that as his opinion. I'm pretty sure all he meant was thats what the average viewer sees it as, not his own view. GT didn't do any favors here, they're a very small draw as well.

I don't like it either but find its either to just joke about it than to get all upset. It is what it is.
