The Class of 2013's Scout 300

Jon Wisnieski should be on that list somewhere as he is rated pretty high at tightend. Hopefully Iowa can land both of them.

Commit DE David Kenney finished 300th on the new scout.com list of the top 300 recruits. So, he's now a four star on both the rivals.com, and the scout.com's databases. Both D. Hill and Willies remain three stars.

You serious Clark?

1. We're not a "household" name like Notre Dame, USC, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Nebraska, Texas and Ohio State.

2. We have the absolute worst high school talent of any state with a BCS conference school.

3. Even when we do have years where the talent is decent, we have to fight against another in-state BCS school. The only other states that have multiple BCS conference schools in-state have SIGNIFICANTLY more population than us and thus significantly more talent.

4. We don't have mountains, beaches, attractions, good climate, etc.

Should I go on?

no doubt. the staff has their work cut out for them. on top of lack of instate talent is that iowa's facilities are not exceptional either - and i'm not just referring to football - academic facilities, dorms, etc.

Well, Idaho with Boise State, but agree with the gist of your point, and it's not just that Iowa has relatively weak football talent but that it's position in a rural state makes it harder to get get's from urban and suburban areas to come to Iowa City(although, a very nice college town). Iowa doesn't have the name recognition and the facilities of Nebraska which can draw players that Iowa often cannot.

way more fb talent closer to ID than IA. CA being the main pool. Also, see Boise and athletic department recruiting violations in recent history.

I didn't make a thorough examination of it so I might have missed someone but it looks like Jake Campos at #292 is the only player from the state of Iowa.

Scout.com: Football Recruiting
A fairly large percentage of the top 50 players on this list are likely to be very good college football players. I can't give much credibility to the rankings once you get beyond 100 players.

Are you sure about this? I would assume that most of the California football talent is in the southern half of the state. It's about 900 miles from Boise to LA. It's over 500 miles to Sacramento.

Draw a circle with a radius of 500 miles around Boise and draw the same circle around Iowa City. Which circle contains more college football talent? If you're talking about parents being able to drive to their kid's games, Iowa is in much better recruiting shape than Boise St.

Well, Idaho and California aren't close, and the conservative culture of Idaho versus that California's culture is stark.

That said, yes, BSU has had some recruiting violations that Iowa has not and that's not completely insignificant. Iowa does a good job(I'd grade it around an B/B+) at acquiring available talent and a great job(A) of developing it. Obviously the recruiting challenges Iowa faces are significantly harder than most of the teams that have won at a top 25 percentage that Iowa has the last decade. Hopefully with recent coaching changes and assignments we'll recruit even better than in previous season and maintain that really high level of development.

Good link. So we have the 5th worst talent pool to draw from. Weve also got to compete against an in state bcs conf team.
