The Buy out

That's just Fran's portion. You can then double that amount if we go get the coach from West Virginia. That's where I got the 10 million combined, I mentioned in another post. Then figure on another four million a year for the new coaches' salary.

I don't know what Drake is paying for their current coach but can guarantee is sure in the hell isn't four million a year. It would be the cheaper option but a bit risky. We saw how that worked out with Lickliter. Are we ready to roll the dice like that again? Maybe either one of those coaches' will be great................ then again maybe not. Lickliter2? Yikes!!!

Little Lick Junior can be had for pennies on the dollar

I will never forget the layup he made against Purdue

I never get tired of watching this one

A good point as far as high major and mid-major buy-out/salary demand. I hear others worry about Drake's coach being another Lick because of the pace of play. DeVries is really the same. There's a huge difference between Drake's coach and Lick. Lick had 2 good years after Thad Matta and during his 6 years, he had Brad Stevens on the bench, reportedly calling a lot of the shots. After Lick's first 2 seasons, he had 3 mediocre teams followed by his 1 great season. Drake's coach IS Drake's coach, not some ass't.

As for the pace of play, I guess that's up to what the individual fan wants, but there really isn't much different between Drake and WVU this year. A comparison in team stats:

Drake averaged 68.7 ppg. West Virginia averaged 68.2.

Drake allowed 59.7 ppg. West Virginia allowed 64.8 ppg.

Drake was 364th in the nation in possessions per game. West Virginia was 301th.

Drake was 43rd in offensive efficiency and West Virginia was 255th.

Drake was 26th in defensive efficiency and WVU was 21st.

The only real difference in team stats is in offensive efficiency. DeVries is the safer pick. McCollum is the higher potential for home run hire or bust.

Agree with all of this. Only thing in common between Lick and McCollum is pace. One has a really strong resume. The other, as you’ve pointed out, really didn’t.

I prefer him to DeVries. I think DeVries is much more likely to end up with a record that’s a Fran retread. Where Men’s Basketball is at Iowa right now, Beth needs a home run hire.

If McCollum doesn’t come, I think DeVries is the next best option, but I am not nearly as excited.

For what it’s worth, I’ve seen some chatter that Indiana is zeroing in on Clemson’s Brownell. Whether that’s because McCollum is a lock at Iowa is to be seen.

That's some really good information. I love your summation "The only real difference in team stats is in offensive efficiency. DeVries is the safer pick. McCollum is the higher potential for home run hire or bust."

Maybe Beth will surprise us all. The way she dumped Brian F, may indicate she is cut out of a different cloth. That would be refreshing.

The last thing anyone wants to see is another Lickliter mess. I hope we have a surprise hire that will invigorate the basketball program.

Yep, the unceremonious mid season BF announcement made me very confident the Fran firing was a near certainty. This is her first real hiring test for normie fans, and it’s a big one.

Frankly, I am totally unimpressed with both of them. Watching a team at 301 in possessions, 255 in efficiency with the ball? Yawn. A guy coming from Drake? Really?

Yeah, well. If Beth can find $15 to $17 million in the next couple of days, we have a shot.
Buyouts, CHA renovations, new coach salary around the mean in the BT, and for God’s sake, a few million $$ in NIL? Really. Really?

From the movie, "Is this Heaven?" "No, it's Iowa and we can't get good coaches we are not Iowa State in basketball.'

Just how in the hell do they have better runs in March and we Iowa fans sit at home and watch them instead of our beloved Hawkeyes. WTF??? Good Gawd it's a cow town.

Well, the university can't pitch in anything for NIL, but yeah, it's literally her job to make the rest of that happen. I trust she is more than capable. Gary Barta didn't make it easy for her, though.

I'll take it (especially if it wins) compared to the futility of Fran ball. Who gives a damn about scoring points if you aren't winning the games that matter? I'll tell you one group that definitely didn't the past two seasons: Iowa fans. Drake has played incredible defense and has a highly efficient offense. I'll take that with a slow pace over Fran not seeing a second weekend of the dance in fifteen years. As a Hawk, I don't care about points scored, out of either the Football or Basketball teams. I want to see wins. I want to see postseason relevance.

Give his squad a chance in the first-round matchup against Missouri. I don't think you'll walk away from that game saying it was boring. Drake put a whole hell of a lot more entertaining product on the court this year than Iowa did.

I was thinking the same thing today. Great minds. In addition, how the hell does Wisconsin play at such a high level? I remember when they were a door mat.

I get your point. Mostly agree. I want an upgrade in wins. But remember. Fran won a lot of games. I have not watched Drake play since Maury John. Would you admit that the stats I mentioned are not where you would like to see them?
