The Breakdown: How the Hawkeyes Knocked Off No. 17 Purdue

Iowa's 2 basketball teams are plus 52 in rematches this week! The women improved 25 points against Illinois. The men improved 27 points against Purdont. Both teams played great games!

If you would have told me that Purdue was 11-28 (40%) from 3 and were 21-25 (84%) and we were 6-14 (43%) and 9-18 (50%) from the line......I would have told you we got beat by 20+ again.

Great, great job of battling by this young team, they scrapped, and fought, and battled for the win.

Iowa is 8-2 over their last 10 with wins over ISU, UNI, MICHIGAN and PURDUE but 56 hasn't seen much growth on defense from the start of the year.

I'm sure he will be in here with some bogus Kem Pom stats or tell us the teams we have beaten aren't very good. I would add to your post that we were an eyelash away from beating a decent team in Nebraska on the road. If we would've finished that one I would feel really fantastic about this team. But I still feel pretty darn good.

Great game and analysis. You did leave out one major part that Purdue fans would bring up as would Iowa fans if the tables were reversed,

Purdue missed some point-blank shots or the ball that went out off of Cook (I have not seen a replay)?

Yep, those numbers suggest Iowa should have been blown out.

At one point in the 2nd half Purdue was shooting 55% from 3's and over 90% from the line. It seemed to all fall apart when Cline stepped to the line and missed 2 free throws (he was 100% before that 7/7). Their last made 3 pointer was at the 4:33 mark (Cline), they missed their last 5 attempts.

I thought Iowa's D bothered the shots. They Purdue guys on a number of them were taken out of their shooting form and stretched. They seemed hurried. Was referring to the Cook call. In real time it was not a bad call. The replay appeared to show the ball off Cook, but then again it wasn't completely clear. This board would be jumping up and down in reverse.

I am having so much fun watching Iowa basketball games...including the Nebraska game. I see talent. I see upside...and that includes the current season. I see improvement. I love the style of play....tempo/pace. I love the way Jok is playing and leading...has matured so much.

I love how tough our young guys are...physically and mentally. Baer gets hurt and is back on the floor. Pemsl gets hurt and is back in the game. Bohannon gets hurt and limps through it. I hope Uhl is okay. Kreiner comes in and plays like he's been in the rotation all season. I could go on and on.

That ball went off Cook plain as day. I was pretty surprised after reviewing it like they did that they didn't overturn it..

Was like the NFL review system. The call was out on Purdue and it wasn't conclusive enough to overturn it.

But if I was a Purdue fan I wouldn't be happy with the call for sure.

If you'd have told me Iowa was going to have 40 pts in the paint to their 20 I'd have called you a liar... That seems like such a backwards stat for what those two teams normally should have been doing. That was one of those games where obviously everyone knew how they killed us last time and they truly did play with that chip on their shoulder. Jok was amazing. Start to finish he played great. Him missing a free throw is about the only thing I can nit pick with him about. He really showed that young team how to lead. He didn't just score he defended as well as he ever has rebounded and just stuffed the stat sheet. He's grown up so much since he's been there. It's been fun to watch

To me it appeared Swanigan and Haas both got tired with about 5 minutes left...fast paced game for those big horses to run...both teams burned a lot of energy in this face paced battle, Iowa's depth helped.

Jok great game...careless turnovers at the end almost derailed the victory.

Kriener a nice surprise...Purdue puzzled by him...

JB making those two freethrows like he was in grade school...very nice.

Uhl looks confused by it all...surprised by this.

Kriener was absolutely a perfect compliment to what we were trying to do in the paint... He shocked the crap out of me by how poised he was in the shots he took. I think he was key to winning the game at the end when their bigs were getting tired.

Uhl had an excellent last game. He was playing good D against Purdue and had the oop. He only played a total of 15 min before the injury.

When jok got busted for driving without a licence. I posted how bad it sucked because he was going to be really good and there was no way he would make it 3 more years without getting kicked off the team. Someone who gets in trouble twice as a freshman is really going to have a hard time making it 3 more years in Iowa city. Turns out I was right on how bad it would have sucked and wrong on him getting in trouble again. One of my all time favorite Hawks.
