The Breakdown: Hawkeye Struggles Continue at Wisconsin

My favorite series from the game was in the second half. JBo got switched onto Happ so Uw threw it in. Garza standing right there decides not to double. Happ backs JBo in and lays it in uncontested.

Next possession UW throws it into Happ with Cook on him. Garza comes flying in for a double team and Happ proceeds to spin right by Cook on the baseline (which is where he shouldn’t be giving up with a double there).

A perfect microcosm of a poorly coached, poor effort, and poor basketball IQ defensive team.

Might want to try to hire a different "defensive specialist" to teach the basics next year.

That's generally what happens when you bring in a specialist or any other consultant- you may see some short term improvement but as soon as adversity arises people regress to their old ways.

Hawkeyes are 34 for 121 (28 percent) from three in their last five games. It looks like a team that when the shots aren't falling it affects it on defense. This team has limitations on that end, but the effort and connection is not there.

I find it hard to imagine how a head coach who chases referees after a game, blaming them for "cheating" will have the ability to toughen up a team for the battles and adversities they face. Just don't see it happening, excuse making, blaming, feeling like victims is the "DNA" upon which this team has been molded and coached. Frustrating, and, in all honesty, quite sad. You try to lead your children out of this manner of thinking and living in grades 1-3. And here we are.

Maybe someone to teach them how to box out to get rebounds too?
Concur, I never cease to be amazed how this fundamental/effort move which has so much bearing on a game's outcome is completely ignored by so many Hawkeyes. If the ball is in the air, you have a few moments, find someone to block out rather than looking. Pick and roll (the right direction) help out defense. Yadayadayada

This team is fundamentally weak and emotionally soft.

Agree on the fundamentals. We are lacking just basic defensive principles. Watched JW fall for 3 shot fakes last night, leaving his feet each time and putting himself in a horrible position. With all the coaching he has had AAU, high school, 1st year college, he shouldn't be making that mistake. Fran needs to go back to basics with this team for a couple of days and not worry about the shots falling. Nobody forgets how to shoot. Also, please stop the merry go round substitutions. If you can't play hard for more than 4 minutes before you go to the bench something is seriously wrong with conditioning on this team.

Agree, there is something seriously wrong with this team, it starts at the HC position, and drifts down from there. Who is responsible, well, we need to go up one higher, to the AD of course. But he is in his bunker I would guess.

Garza needs to stop shooting 3's. Feels like he hasn't made one in a month. Moss has been really bad as well lately.

I was talking about Joe and Baer jumping at almost every pump fake a few games ago. Is someone telling them to do that? I don’t understand.

Soft Quitters
So you're blaming the players? I think they're demoralized because they know they need coaching they aren't getting. Bohannon ought to be demoralized because the offense never gets him open looks, and it isn't designed to get him open looks. The obvious example (sorry Hawk fans) is Steve Alford. Indiana's offense was designed to get him open looks. And if Bohannon ought to be demoralized, all the other players who know that ought to be demoralized as well. Because the problem is the coaching. Other problems--1) why does Garza EVER shoot a three? 2) Why does Cook EVER shoot from beyond ten feet? 3) Why does McCaffrey take Kriener and/or Baer out when they're playing well, and--more to the point--better than Cook? MCCaffrey's post-game comments typically show he doesn't understand his own team's deficiencies and how to mitigate the effects of these.

The HC is responsible for the team, he recruits, teaches, coaches, hires the assistants, decides who plays, who doesn't. The AD hires the HC. The leadership and heart of any team comes from the top, to answer your question.
