The Big Ten is not a 3-point shot league!

I don’t know about anyone else, but I have been really disappointed with the direction our league has taken in the last several years to decade. The Big Ten was once synonymous with smash mouth football and basketball. We haven’t lost this in football, but a large portion of teams have lost this mentality in basketball. I believe the loss of this mentality has made the league suffer, that not only many, but the majority of B10 teams really do not compete in being able to pull in the dominant many big men at this point in time. Sure, there are always big men out there, but the league in recent years has not done well in pulling in the dominant big bodies. I feel reason for this is many, but largely because of the great transition the league has seen in its coaches, and because the league has caved to somewhat to outside trends. As a result, we have somewhat lost our way. What was once a league of great and fast paced inside and out, offensive and defensive, up and down court play, has largely turned in to slow, half court play that relies heavily on merely the 3-point shot. Just look around the league at the number of teams relying heavily on the 3-point shot – and many doing poorly at that!

The reason for our great reliance on the 3 is because we have lost our ability to compete for the dominant big men.

3 point shooters are a dime a dozen. Dominant big men are not.

The teams of this league need to return to putting a much greater emphasis on recruiting the bigs. I believe that snatching up the bigs will make it easier to fill out the remainder of our classes with good players. Once recruits see they may play on well-rounded teams that consist of both inside and outside talent, they will want to jump on board.

So lets all do our part to bring back the smash-mouth mentality. Let not relegate our league to being satisfied with merely half court offense and the 3-point shot. Let our league coaches and administrators know that we are not going to put up with the current direction of the game. There are many other teams and leagues out there that can fill that role, and more power to them, but this is the Big Ten, and we are not satisfied!

The Big Ten is not a 3-point shot league!

Actually, it seems like I have noticed this with college basketball in general. It's either dunks, layups, or 3 point shots. The mid-range game has totally disappeared.

How many times do you see a team in a tied game, holding for the last shot to win it all, then they just jack up a 3 to win it all. You don't need the 3 to break the tie. You could drive and draw some kind of contact and get to the foul line, or dump it off to one of your post guys.

I think college basketball has gotten really "3 happy". Call me old fashioned (I don't mind), but I thought the game was better in the old days where the idea was to get the closest shot that you could.

Its basically the basketball equivalent of the the spread offense.

In the Iowa-Drake game last night, the teams shot a combined 57 three's. 57!

Big Ten Basketball was awesome in the Ronnie Lester, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas era, when Big Ten teams won the NCAA's in '79 and '81, and sent two teams to the Final Four in '80.

This is something that has driven me nuts for quite a while. B-Ball is real sloppy anymore, no mid range game. So many skills are nearly extinct anymore. Better athletes/worse game IMHO.

The 3 ball and Guards/Guards disguised in forwards bodies drive basketball at all levels now and you either evolve/adapt or you don't survive...
